Hemoglobin is a metalloprotein which transports oxygen from oxygenation sites to the rest of the tissues. Iron is part of the structure of the heme group and it is essential for the transport of oxygen.
A decrease in the concentration of hemoglobin is called anemia and an increase in its concentration is seen in polycythemia which is characterized by an excessive amount of red blood cells.
