Trouble with my new Garmin watch

avatar
(Edited)

So I bit the bullet and finally got a Garmin watch. It is a VivoActive 4 which is neither the top of the line nor the bottom and I guess I like it so far. I should have seen this coming but it is considerably more complicated than I hoped it would be.

I like some of the features on the watch but so far, I don't really think I am going to be using this all that much.

For starters as someone that has only ever had a regular watch, I wasn't expecting it to be turning itself off so frequently. Sometimes I am not exercising.... ok most of the time... and I just want to know what time it is. I don't want to have to stand there to wait for my watch to boot up. I am sure this is something that can be managed in the settings but jeesy peasy, it's complicated but I will admit that this is likely something that just takes some getting used to.

On my very first run I was not so delighted that while it told me my pace and how long I had been running, it didn't register how far I had gone at the end of it. Why the hell not? If it can tell how fast I am moving and telling me my per km pace how the hell does it know that but not how far I went by the end of it? This was just annoying.

This (the above) is the most annoying thing about this watch and might end up being the reason why I end up not using it a great deal. I live in a VERY urban area with lots of buildings all around and I swear I stood there stretching for a good 20 minutes before the GPS even activated. I went online after this inaugural first run to find out some information online and it turns out that TONS of people have been having the exact same problem with this exact same model. The official solution to the problem is to "stand outside with no overhead obstructions and wait for it to connect." Ok, that is probably all fine and dandy if you live in the suburbs of DeMoines, Iowa, but a little bit more difficult to find in a place like where I live in which is one of the most vertical cities in the entire country, if not the world. I don't think I've had an unobstructed view of the sky in weeks.

Another gripe I have is that when I simply want to adjust the settings, which right now the only thing I want to do is change the main display from analog to digital, I have to go through the app in order to change it, but wait! I can't do that until it is done updating the software!

image.png

I've been stuck on this screen for at least the last 10 minutes and the only thing I want to do is make a simple adjustment to the display. Again, this could be something that I am actually able to accomplish using the watch face but it simply isn't evident where the settings actually are

Which one of these things would you press to access the settings? Well it turns out it is none of them. Instead, you have to hold down the bottom button on the right and then scroll down to get to the settings. How the hell am I supposed to figure that out?

Urgh. I guess I am being fussy because I just want things to work out of the box. The next hurdle I am going to encounter is how it is that I am going to get music to work on this thing because the entire idea behind buying this thing wasn't just to track what I am doing but also to NOT have to bring my phone with me as well. For now the hundreds of dollars watch has not succeeded in doing either of the major things I bought it for, which was to actually track my distance traveled and to have some tunes for me in a more portable item than my phone. I suppose it has done a decent job of tracking my heart rate, so that is good I guess.

We'll see how I feel about it a week from now. As it stands now I kind of feel like I wasted a bunch of money.

I see tones of people using Garmin and so many people complain about them, it's interesting. I haven't used Garmin for about 10 years as the ones that I want to buy are usually a bit pricey for me and I can get the same specs at a cheaper price...I would be interested to know how you go in the coming weeks when you get to know the watch better.

if you are using a cheaper one please let me know what it is so I can have a look at that. Since I haven't damaged this one and bought it at a retail store, I think I can return it.

I don't want to spoil things even more but the wrist heart rate monitors are not that good either, mine gives me misleading numbers all the time especially at the high end. Overall thought I still use and like my garmin fenix 3 and its getting pretty old now I think there up to fenix 7 now !LOL. Mine also has trouble locating in built up area like the middle of a major city with sky scrappers around but no drama in the suburbs. I am able to leave my watch face on all the time so hopefully it is just a simple set up fix for you.

thanks for the information. I think I am just going to try to return this to the shop because if buildings getting in the way of the GPS signal is going to fudge up all my runs then it won't be able to record any of them. Honestly, they shouldn't even be selling these in metro areas if this is an issue that all of them have.

Maybe it would help, when you start an activity, than you go to settings (the lower button at the right) then you scroll down, there ist the setting gps, choose both satellites.

The first time to find a signal takes usually longer.

Settings functions always with the lower button, the Foto you show with music, wallet etc is the upper button.

To the watch face use an extra garmin app (Garmin IQ I think) to load new faces to the watch first. Also new widgets you can transfer on the watch.

I did the Music transfer as well, but I don't use this function.

I use vivoactive 4s. Yes it is not easy to use, you should get used to it first. I watched videos to set it up.

I am satisfied with the watch, I use it in the city, but not in heavily build in city. My next watch will be Garmin 55 forerunner, that has map function as well.

thanks for the helpful information and this is quite reassuring. I suppose I just get frustrated easily because I am a low-tech kind of guy. I still carry a paper notebook with me to the gym to record my workouts! I am getting better with the watch each day that passes.

Sorry to hear you are having these problems. I've had my Garmin Forerunner for a while and it's working well for me. I'm not in a built up area and getting a GPS fix is fairly quick. Once I set up a face I liked I've hardly touched the settings. Mine tells me how far I've been, so I'm not sure why you don't see that. I've not used other models or brands, so can't really compare with anything else.

not telling me how far I went was a result of me not being able to figure out the GPS. I think i have a handle on those controls now so the coming week will be very telling. Thanks!

Sounds like you got a dud mainly because of where you live which is not exactly good news. Surely the manufacturers know about this and you could get a refund.

I already went back to the store and the sales reps helped me a lot with figuring out the issues I was having including going outside with me to show me how to obtain a GPS signal. I don't like that I have to go to specific locations to get that to work but according to them and many other users I have read from, it connects faster after the first couple of times.... because : reasons.
