Stardate 135.3120 (NOVEMBER 7, 1963)

On a clear morning at White Sands, a boilerplate Apollo capsule waited on the desert floor with a launch escape tower above it. At 16:00 UTC the abort signal fired. Solid rockets lifted the spacecraft clear of an imaginary failing booster and pitched it sideways, the same motion that would one day carry a crew toward the sea.

The flight lasted two minutes and forty-five seconds. The tower fell away, the parachutes opened as planned, and the capsule settled onto the range. It was the first off-the-pad test of Apollo's launch escape system, a brief uncrewed rehearsal for a kind of protection that everyone hoped would never be needed.
