Wanna Hear Some Really Sweet News?

avatar

Here's some good news for ya.

Well, it is for us - I was ringing and texting everyone and thought - shit, I better tell me Hive peeps! Many of you have been around for the journey - Dad got sick with Stage 4 cancer before COVID, suffered awful chemo, nearly died a few times, got better, went on a trial and got better again, then it came back at Christmas, by which time the CAR-T cell therapy had arrived in Australia and was government funded - before they were looking at remortgaging their house and going to Boston for treatment.

A quick aside - my Dad's always been Mr Yogi Surfing Vegetarian Fitness guy - getting cancer was a total left field thing to happen. Turns out the army admitted it was their fault - chemicals in the water etc in Vietnam. Dad only went for six months and didn't even fight - no PTSD, nothing - just fifty years later, a heart attack and cancer, which is typical for men who served in Vietnam.

SO - back to the good news. The really, really good news. Dad couldn't even ring me because he 'would cry' - Mum had to.

He's in remission.

image.png

Apparently Mum walked into the hospital room and Dad's waving his arms about saying something about 'mission'. Mum's like: 'what's he bought now?', lol.

They reckon the remision for CAR-T is ten years, so that's usual life expectancy anyway - Dad's 75. Go science. Getting your own cells to fight cancer? That's hardcore freaking amazing science. They reckon chemo's on the way out and this will be the new frontline of treatment. And Dad'll be one of the first lot of real success stories since this treatment was made available in Australia.

He's an active man full of vim and vigour, so I imagine he'll make the most of it.

Sitting here writing to you all crying. Going to go for a walk and let it all out in the rain.

I'm so happy to hear this wonderful news! May he completely beat the cancer and be the surfer yogi fitness veggie he is, for another long time! I don't know anything about the treatment method, but helping the body itself to fight the cancer sounds like a good approach. I wish you many more years of wonderful moments with your dad! Thanx for sharing your happiness.

David, thankyou! They literally took out his cells, sent them to LA for tweaking, and sent them back to reinject, whereupon the body fights its own cancer with these cells. I know I've explained that terribly but .. hope I get across the wow factor. It's truly a modern miracle and will send chemo to the dark ages where it belongs. It was still a few weeks hard work but when they showed him NOTHING on the screens today, well, what a story hey. And of course I'd share it here, Hive is family 💕💕💕

Ah yes and sure isn't it great too to have options and not be stuggling about what to post about, no writers block with you @riverflows and long may it last, sure your mushroom hunting adventures alone would be enough to keep posting for a year straight! ;)

I know lol and I try to restrain myself. Hive has sure opened up the floodgates of words 😂 I'm trying to do 365 days of posting. Turns out it's not hard at all!!!

I was trying the same, but missed maybe 2 or 3 days since October, so have given up. I try to post every day, but don't beat myself up if I miss a day.

Have you heard of car t therapy?

Not at all - we had a good friend pass away from cancer a few years ago here in South Africa, but CAR-T sounds very new? I am sure South Africa will get to catch up with it soon enough - we do have some good hospitals!

Yes it's quite new, well, they've been researching and developing and doing trials for years - you should read about it, it's mind blowing! Sorry to hear about your friend. Dad was lucky really, right, place, right time, right treatment. So many aren't. Some aren't strong enough to do this therapy either, Dad was pretty fit and strong so did well. But this brings hope to many.

Mate, it's the best news ever. Dad's one of my best mates and such a sweet, kind, awesome man... None of us can imagine life without him in it. Death is inevitable but sheesh, it's great it's postponed a bit. He deserves to be on planet Earth for a bit longer. And I can take him mushrooming with me now 😂😂😂😂

I can wholeheartedly agree on that death being postponed part. Dad's are awesome and the more time spent in that awesomeness the better.

Spare him the mushrooming! lol

😂 What trips me out is my son's about to be a Dad. And so the awesomeness continues. Time is so strange.

OH! THAT was the good news! No wonder you were so stoked! Way to go Dad! Sorry he got his cancer in Vietnam. The VA admitted my husband's cancer could have been from that also.

I am delighted for your dad, and for you and the family! What such good news!

This is the most amazing news I've heard for a long time! And honestly, it is not long ago that I was thinking what happened with the cells you had sent to US? I had never heard of this magic method till you mentioned it! May it be the cure for many people!
I could fly over there just for a hug @riverflows :)) Awesome! I hope the best will happen!!!

(my mobile phone is too old and the screen too broken to leave comments when I was away, but I had to go back to this post now and send some love, cause this is truly WONDERFUL!)

I know isn't it amazing? Miracles of modern science or what. Hoping it lasts - would rather he just die of old age than cancer. I mean, if he's gotta go, we're all prepared for that, but still. It's a pretty cool thing to happen. He's still up in Melbourne waiting to be released, probs in about a week, he's sooo over it. WEaning off steroids and they want to make sure his heart, liver etc are okay.
