Don’t Go Plant-Based

I know, this headline may have actually sparked some controversial vibes inside your grey matter but hold on for a second and read this post carefully to know what I’m talking about.

This is not intended to demotivate you from taking your health to the next level but about giving you a brief idea of the challenges you may face as part of the “whole food plant-based” movement.

This lifestyle is something far from being new, in fact, its origins are quite debatable and some argue that civilization thrived because of greens rather than meat and that it may hold the answer to some of the world's top problems.

Learn to deal with haters

Whenever someone starts talking about the dangers of continuing towards the expansion of animal agriculture while displaying videos of animal cruelty including constant insemination of cows or chicken-chicks being turned into nuggets, someone else is ready to stand-up and argue about more public subsidies towards the farming sector.

There’s always going to be someone who will stand up against your ideals, whether you are an entrepreneur or someone chasing ambitious goals or ideals.

Besides politics, this movement can also create friction on the dinner table with your friends and family.

Nevertheless, this is no reason to feel discouraged. More so, it’s about finding the right way to express yourself while exerting your right to choose what you want to eat and live for.

We’re adults, and each of us has the right to put whatever the hell we want inside our bodies, right?

Well, things get complicated when by doing that you’re also negatively impacting the planet.

So, when friction arises, don’t take it personally and play the “I’m right because you’re wrong” card - even when you know there’s a bunch of evidence behind it.

It’s natural that people will aggressively react towards something that attempts to destroy their lifestyle standards; it’s a biological mechanism that allowed us to survive!

Learn one or two things about negotiation and persuasion.

You may not be able to fully convince them, but at least you can agree to disagree and keep having a wonderful time.

Hell, who said changing the world was easy?

Educate yourself, prior to educating others

If you’re going to strike back, make sure it’s from a rational perspective rather than aggression and blowing fists.

You won’t be doing any good to the reputation of this movement if you lack the appropriate knowledge and strong scientifically-backed evidence.

Get used to reviewing papers and learning about the different types of health studies as well as developing your critical thinking.

Identify trustful sources and contrast your views with other knowledgeable leaders of the movement.

This will allow you to avoid falling in the category of “prophet” or “extreme-activist” whose only expertise revolves around filling their arguments with irrationalities or conspiracies about the food industry and big pharma.

Listen first and create a curious environment to spark better and more sustainable alternatives.

Some people will be open and others will just completely ignore you, but always remain cool no matter what.

Identify signal from noise within the movement

Who said meat-eaters were the only enemy?

It may even be possible to go on a civil war if we start mentioning the different types of green-eaters within the whole-plant thing.

Raw-eaters, fruitarians, flexitarians, vegetarians, etc.

Each of them will tell you why their movement is the best, but only a few will be backing their claims with scientific peer-reviewed evidence.

It’s so sad and annoying to read articles or watch videos about false health claims or disease cures from such movements and even worse when the mainstream media backfires at the whole food plant-based movement just because of a few culprits who didn’t do their due diligence or are just interested in taking a cut through their personal brands.

This also includes vegan extremists who normally have an agenda with mixed political views.

We all need to understand that this isn’t only about a lifestyle shift but people’s lives and the sustainability of this world resources.

Stay in the loop

Your knowledge is an important asset, so keep it up to date.

This is the part where things can go terribly wrong.

From new supplement discoveries to superfoods that claim to be the philosopher stone of nutrition.

Prior to having a strong point of view about something related to a specific food or nutrient, review, read, review, read again, contrast and above all, remain skeptical until the evidence shows the contrary.

Also, as Dr. Michael Greger says “Follow the money”.

It’s no surprise to see “Sugar cures cancers” or “Eggs cholesterol reverses aging” headlines all over the place only to find out who funded the studies – the Russians aren’t the only ones using fake news.

The egg, sugar, meat industry and even big pharma will keep fighting until the end to prove their point.

Highlights

• The whole food plant-based movement is not a religion, have an open mind when having a conversation
• Educate yourself! You don’t have to memorize every single study but have integrity when backing your claims.
• Sometimes you got to fight two flanks or three flanks at the same time. Meat-eaters, raw-vegans, fruitarians, etc. Just know when to agree to disagree.
• Knowledge is constantly changing, what may have been true yesterday may be a myth today.
