Between the Screen and the Soul

Yes, if not everyone, then almost everyone makes use of technology today just to do one or two things either at home, in the shop, at the office, or anywhere we might find ourselves today. But the question that keeps coming to my mind is whether technology has made our lives so easy or whether it has added more to our daily problems.

Look at the situation in my country today; even the youngest seem to have a mobile device, and what the majority usually do is to start their day pressing the phone, and some even press this same phone till they sleep off. We wake up, and the first thing we do is scroll endlessly to the extent that we forget that we have other tasks to do that day, and when they ask us what we are doing on the phone, some say that they are trying to stay updated on what is trending. But to be sincere, this has tied a lot of people down to the extent that they feel that they do not need human connection, which has left them alone and lonely in their zone.

But do not get it twisted; technology has its bad side and also the good side that has made some things so easy for us, like paying bills easily, sending messages without waiting for months to get them delivered, getting connected to our loved ones through chats or video calls, and even having remote work that makes life a bit flexible. This tech that I am talking about has made our lives so comfortable and faster, but the truth be told, all these things come at a cost, maybe big or small.

Some people no longer concentrate while walking on the road or driving or when they are having a serious conversation with others because they are busy glued to their screens. A lot of young ones now have been exposed to social media, and they are posting all sorts of things instead of still learning from their parents. Even our relationship life that used to be physical has been represented and taken over by all sorts of digital emojis. No real connection again.

And if I look at it from this perspective of mine, I do not think technology is really the problem; we are the problem because we seem to abuse everything. It's true that we wanted an easy life and freedom, and yet, we allow ourselves to get caged in the tech world. Every ring, beep, and screen time takes something away from us.

Yet, I can not leave out a lot of good things technology has brought to us, but like I usually say, we need to always put a balance on everything we do. We can use technology and still remember that we have a life outside of it.
