Historical background🧭🏰 / Antecedentes historicos🫅🏻

To learn a little about the history of Palmela I went to the archaeological museum that is near the castle and photographed several objects that date from various periods, for example we see many clay jars that were typical of the Romans and then other utensils from the Moors, and even arrowheads from the third century BC, these possibly from the Celts, the oldest objects that are here in the museum are from the Neolithic, discovered from some caves where it was also thought that the first people in Portugal lived.🌍🚩

objects to create music and decorative🎵🕯️

According to the Portuguese archaeologists who carried out a study in Palmela with all the objects that were collected, they came to the conclusion that a town was the first to settle in the current Palmela, that was in 310 BC, later with the arrival of the Romans, a Lusitanian whose name was: (Áulio Cornelio Palma) was the one who gave the name of Palmela to the city and who at the same time fortified it to make it impenetrable to the enemy. This is believed to have been in 106 BC, however the Work was not completed due to the occupation by the Visigoths.🧭🌏

After the Visigoths, Palmela would be occupied by the Moors for hundreds of years, and it was even the Moors who made the first fortification, the "first castle", this around the 8th and 9th centuries, the Moors were a fairly strong Arab tribe. Regarding their military tactics, so much so that there were periods where they gave a lot of battle to the kings of Portugal, for example at the time of the reconquest in the 11th and 12th centuries, fortifications were conquered but after months or years they were conquered by the Moors again, These walls that you see here were houses where they lived.🌍🏰

When we reached the time of the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, Palmela suffered several bloody wars and for many years this fortress was disputed for its great economic-political-military interest. Alphonsus I was one of the great conquerors of Portugal in 1147. the city of Lisbon from the Moors, which caused Sintra, Almada and Palmela to fall at the same time, when this happens the Muslims leave Palmela and regroup in a village called Alcacer do Sal which was their domain, their The army increased and trained to attack Palmela.🌍🏰

After preparing their army for a few years, the Moors returned to Palmela and fought hard to reconquer their fortress and city. This worked and the Portuguese lost Palmela for the second time, and not only Palmela but also the entire south of the Tejo River, later in In 1158 the Christian army fought a new fight and managed to drive away the Muslim troops but they lost, and it was not only until the 1165th century that Palmela was permanently conquered, and it was from there that they began to build what we know as the castle to avoid another fall against the Moors who had established themselves in the area of Evora (south)👸🏻🏰

The order of Santiago and Palmela🧭🏰 / La orden de Santiago y Palmela🫅🏻

When Sancho I came to the throne between 1185-1211, the domains referring to Palmela were donated to the order of Santiago, the "Order of Santiago" was a Christian military religious order that protected pilgrims who went to Santiago, and also They were in charge of expelling the Moors from the Portuguese reconquest territory, at that time Palmela received the "fuero" document, an inscription of statutes that establish laws and regulations for a village or city, that is, Palmela was already formally a Portuguese city.🏰🌍

The attack of the Almohad dynasty🧭🏰 / El ataque de la dinastia almohades🫅🏻

Between 1184-1199, a caliph named "Abu Yaqub" appeared, this character would shake the Portuguese territory and from the south he would conquer Alcacer do Sal from the Portuguese for the fourth time and he would not stop there, having the Algarve under his rule he regrouped and continued climbing until reaching Almada, this would consequently cause Palmela and Almada itself to fall, the battle would last a year between 1190 and 1191.🌍🏰

A new order🧭🏰 / Una nueva orden🫅🏻

Palmela brother🏰🌍

After Palmela fell into Arab rule at the end of the 11th century, it was not long before the city and its fortress was reconquered, which had already been badly damaged in its last battle. It is believed that it was in 1205 when Palmela once again belonged to the Arabs. Portuguese and the new religious order is reinstated, however to avoid future invasions the troops go south to expel the Arabs from the territory of Evora and Algarve, which worked.🧭🌏

Looting by the Castilian troops🧭🏰 / Saqueo por la tropa Castellana🫅🏻

In the reign of Ferdinand I of Portugal, a great battle was being fought in Lisbon against the Castellana troops. Clearly, if we study history, the Spanish tried for many years to conquer our country but they never succeeded, as the main castle of Lisbon was surrounded by no The Palmela castle was able to be defended, which caused the Spanish to sack it, this in March 1382.🏰🌎

This was the main tower and the highest point of the castle and even the city, from here you had a 360 degree view, and you could clearly see Lisbon Castle dozens of kilometers away, previously all the castles were connected when there were some type of war, initially a fire was made.🌎👳🏻‍♂️

My favorite photo, the first wall built in Palmela, dates back to the 11th century and was placed when the Moors took the castle to prevent Portuguese invasions.🏰👨🏻‍🏫

The earthquake causes havoc in Palmela🧭🏰 / El terremoto causa estragos en Palmela🫅🏻

Incredible how the castle of Palmela and the fortifications of the village withstood hundreds of wars throughout its history, and only the great earthquake of 1755 was the one that managed to destroy the castle almost completely, when the Portuguese orders were extinguished it was occupied by the Portuguese military regime.👨🏻‍🏫🏰

Here we see an inscription from a tomb that belonged to a count with the last name Brito, it is interesting because it is my last name and in fact in my house we have the coat of arms of the Brito surname and it matches the one on the tomb.🚩👨🏻‍🏫
