I got very shocked today when I read an article that says the very genes responsible for making our brains so powerful could also be linked to disorders like autism and intellectual disabilities.

There was a scientific study done on SRGAP2B, SRGAP2C and SYNGAP1 and that brought this new knowledge to us.

We've always bragged about the power of our brains and how it makes us better than any living thing on the planet. How we are able to learn, to create and also evolve. But it turns out that those same genes that gave us thos upper hand in evolution might also be creating problems for us. I guess it's true what they say, good things mostly create downsides.

These same genes slow down brain development which is supposed to be why we’re as smart we are. I didn't understand how the genes did it until I kept researching on it.

We already know that our synapses take years to mature and that's unlike other animals like the mouse whose brains fully develop in a matter of months. That extended timeline gives us this room for complex learning, creativity and also problem-solving.

But with a longer developmental time, it creates a chance for developmental problems as well. So the same machinery that makes us uniquely human could lead to developmental disorders which a lot of people experience today.

There was a little boy's documentary I watched on TV who’s been diagnosed with autism. Most people around that boy and even the doctors had endless questions about what really caused that disease and why it’s more common today.

I think this study has given us the hint. It might be the downside of being Human and the disadvantage of having that evolutionary advantage over other animals. Our very unique human traits might explain why our species also carries unique disorders. I still think there's a lot more research to be done to know for sure about this problem. Maybe as we keep researching we might find a way to solve these problems we face as humans.
