Virtual Reality: 5 reasons immersive VR videos still suck

Immersion Killer.

3 // 3DoF statt 6DoF (Degrees of Freedom)

Was sagt ihr dazu?

With the Apple Vision Pro, the focus has returned to immersive video.

Apple's vision is to use the headset as a monitor and work tool replacement to consume content or work in VR/AR.

However, I don't think that's a good idea at the moment. VR glasses are currently best suited for VR games and real 3D experiences in my opintion, but less so for watching YouTube videos or as a laptop replacement.

5 reasons why immersive VR videos still suck:

1 // Most VR videos are 2D not 3D

The first disappointment is that most 360-degree videos are actually 2D and not 3D. That's still cool, but you miss the spatial dimension, especially if you're used to real VR experiences.

2 // The perspective in VR videos often doesn't feel right

Due to the camera position and the projection into the VR headset, the perspective often doesn't feel right, especially in close-up shots. People and objects suddenly become extremly large. The perspective feels unnatural. Immersion Killer.

3 // 3DoF instead of 6DoF (Degrees of Freedom)

This sounds a bit technical, but the problem is that, unlike in VR games or real VR experiences, you can't move freely in VR videos, i.e. your view is practically always fixed and you can only tilt and turn your head, but you can't move around the room like in VR experiences. This feels extremely unnatural and can also cause motion sickness, which leads us straight to the next point.

4 // Motion sickness

VR videos very quickly cause motion sickness if they contain a lot of movement. There is also the problem that VR videos do not currently support 6DoF, which also contributes to motion sickness. However, you can get used to the motion sickness if you take your time or grow up with VR glasses.

5 // Wearing comfort

The main problem for me, however, is wearing comfort. VR glasses are currently very heavy and uncomfortable to wear. Not something you want to wear on your head for an entire movie. This applies all the more to the Apple Vision Pro, as it is currently one of the heaviest VR glasses.

What do you think? Have you ever seen a 360-degree video or a real 3D immersive video in VR? Do you think immersive videos are the future? Imagine being able to move freely in Hollywood movies as if it were a VR game.

For me the main problem is number 4. Everything else can be fixed, with time and development. Although it is different I remember trying out the 3D effect of the Nintendo 3DS when I bought mine (works without any extra device). I quickly got a headache from that.

I am still a bit afraid of what virtual reality holds but well let's see how the future plays out

I think the main problem is number 3. And I think it will be difficult to overcome this point.

I don't actually see that big of a problem, with number 3. It's not like you are exploring around watching youtube videos on your PC :D

I don't like them because they're heavy. I'm hoping that will improve soon. The motion sickness aspect is not something I would enjoy either. Still lots of room for improvement from my standpoint.

Every device has some limitations, it's not a problem to use

No 5 is the problem. Because when watching videos, one with VR glasses, would find it very uncomfortable and heavy.
Yes I think immersive videos are the future.

Hello brother, I previously read that Facebook will open the field of virtual reality. Frankly, I do not know anything about it. It is enough that we have the Internet, which is very weak and there are also no services to enable one to be in a virtual reality, but we live in a virtual reality.

The future should be lightweight and miniaturized like mobile phones

I think all of them are valid issues but I think number 4 and 5 are the biggest issues. Games are played to be fun and it doesn't bode well if you are not comfortable.

I have never seen or used them but so many people complain that they are heavy
I don’t know how true that is though

The more popular the brand is, the more people will buy its product.
