OBS is the way to go, but as you pointed it out requires a decent amount of processing power.
What’s funny is this laptop I got for free from work (I had to install ssid and battery) seems to run OBS just fine. We didn’t stream just recorded. It it is a Dell latitude E6530 and has the intel i7 with 8 gb ram. So at least he can get started. Maybe I can score another one??

Ah yeah that laptop is a few years newer than your desktop so I'd expect it to do a little better..
Normally laptops don't have much performance but since its newer it may work better on OBS.
