The Beauty of Eucalyptus Tree |ChemFam #31|

Greetings to all my fellow Hivians. Have you ever wondered or wish to achieve heights in your life as that of a eucalyptus tree! In my school days, I used to say I would like to be as tall as a eucalyptus tree, not in the sense of mere height only but in the true sense of peaks to achieve in real life; success that can be seen from miles away and touching the sky yet feet are always on the ground. I may sound more of a philosopher but I still try to connect myself with that of the eucalyptus hoping for a better tomorrow.

In my college campus, we have rows of eucalyptus tree standing still and tall making me ambitious and eager to be one among them. We often sat under them and enjoy conversations and mild breeze. During the sunset, it appears as if they are holding the urge to impart some kind of glow to not lose the beauty they hold. As some wise man once said, ‘’beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’’. For some it might appear dull and boring, but for me every tree standing there pushes me to bring the best out of me in every possible scenarios to outshine everyone.

Apart from the physical beauty the eucalyptus holds, they are full of medicinal benefits as well. We know that these trees often does the housing and feeding for Kikko and Koala and the Bearaby mascot. The oild extracted from the eucalyptus tree provides with a myriad of health and wellness benefits.

Before proceeding to praise for its benefits, I should also be pointing on some of the caveats it also comes with. First thing first, consuming raw eucalyptus leaves or oils is a straightaway NO! It could be harmful to our human body. Our stomach and Koala’s stomach are different and hence they can munch all day long on the eucalyptus tree, which is not the case for us. Eucalyptus oil is often diluted with coconut oil before apply It on the skin. This is kind of a mixing process with another carrier oil to make sure it is not very strong enough for our skin to handle. Some other carrier oil are argan oil and jojoba oil.

Stress Reducing Property of Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptol is the main component found in the tree and it has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties that helps us with a itchy skin, dandruff and a bad breath. The oil has a minty yet woody scent. Studies have suggested that inhaling eucalyptus oil could reduce hypertension and lower levels of anxiety. This is due to a decrease in our sympathetic nervous system and simultaneously an increase in our parasympathetic nervous system. The scent can also boost mood and productivity. Basically an increase in productivity will ultimately lead to the reduction in stress.

Therapy for Sore Muscle

As I have already said the oil has anti-inflammatory effects, so when applied topically it helps sore muscles and joints. The oil works wonder for both acute pain as well as chronic pain such as arthritis. Eucalyptus can also help to heal minor cuts and bruises and bug bites.

Soother for Skin and Scalp

The anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties it holds can soothe dandruff and dryness with ease. For scalp related itchiness, it works like magic. One can add a drop or two of the oil to the shampoo sudsing up.

Eucalyptus oil has the ability to promote ceramides in our skin, and thereby it relieve itchiness for the dry skinned people. Well, ceramides are fatty acids that our skin produces to retain moisture. People with dry skin most often have lower ceramide levels and the oil can help our body to naturally produce more of the desired fat.

Sunburn Fighter

Having out in the sun for too long can cause sunburn. Trust me, again in that sense; eucalyptus is your saviour. The combined pain relieving and skin soothing works wonders to treat the sunburn before the peeling stands a chance. If the burn is a really bad one, then the anti-bacterial properties of the eucalyptus can prevent from further infection. You can combine one or two drops of eucalyptus oil with aloe vera for better and immediate relief.

For the Stuffy Nose

I am myself a victim of sessional allergies. A steamy eucalyptus diffusion can help clear up the nose in no time. The vapor resulting from mixing of hot water and oil breaks up mucus and release any congestion. One can use a eucalyptus steam bath for quick results. One can also put eucalyptus into an essential oil diffuser and keep it nearby while taking a nap or resting.

Remedy for Bad Breath

We can’t actually eat a raw eucalyptus leave but we can use them in a mouthwash. The eucalyptol extract helps to achieve a fresh breath and minty flavour. For the said reason, eucalyptol is also added to some chewing gums because of its unique anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some toothpaste also contains eucalyptus in it or one can create a DIY version at home. It can be done by mixing 6 tablespoons each of coconut oil and baking soda and 20-25 drops of eucalyptus oil.

The benefits the eucalyptus tree possesses are enormous and these plant based derivatives are harmless and causes little to no side effects. I am wrapping up my post for today, but will see you soon with another one.

A beautiful tree, it's a pity that its neighborhood is contraindicated for me :)
