The Starlink satellite problem

The Starlink satellite problem

The satellites of the Starling constellation are a headache for professional astronomers and also for amateurs, since the images they take are damaged by the trace left by the satellites.

At present there are about 3,600 but they could become about 100,000 at the end of this decade and the most promised to solve the matter, but one thing is desire and another is reality that seems to be more complicated than expected and the situation can go even worse, since they have recently discovered that satellites also cause unwanted electromagnetic radiation that affects observations from radio telescopes.

Radio telescopes are huge structures that study the cosmos in the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, in other words, they can see beyond what telescopes that capture visible light see.

In a press release issued by the IAU cps, which stands for Center for the Protection of Calm Dark Sky from Interference from Satellite Constellations, have detected radio signals with the lofar which is a radio telescope centered in the Netherlands but connected to other facilities distributed throughout Europe, this radio telescope apparently captured the signal emitted by the electronic systems of the Starling satellites and also in a frequency range that includes a protected band specifically assigned to radio astronomy by the international telecommunications union.

The authors of the statement clarify that SpaceX is not currently violating the rules, the problem is that this type of mission is not regulated by any legislation, so what they are asking is that it be regulated by means of an international law or regulation and that the satellite builders seek a solution to the problem.

I am citing spacex because it is the one that has the largest number of satellites in space right now and it is on them that the study that is news focused, but the satellite constellations will be a growing activity in the coming years, it seems that everyone wants to have their own constellation Amazon wants to deploy 3,236 satellites, the British company Oneweb wants to deploy 600 and China also wants to have its own constellation that would initially have about 300 satellites.

We are surrounding the earth with a technosphere, we will know how to use the benefits that satellites provide us to be able to connect with each other without ending up losing our connection with the cosmos.
