Sierra Space will debut its first space plane

Souce

The Dream Chaser DC-100 affectionately called Tenacity, a commercial space plane has arrived at NASA's Kennedy Center in Florida, this is its destination before its inaugural mission to the international space station later this year after undergoing rigorous testing at the New Armstrong facility in Ohio.

The Tenacity received the green light for final pre-launch preparations, this includes the completion of the thermal protection system and the integration of the payload, it will soon be launched on a Vulcan rocket from a Launch Alliance to deliver 3 and a half tons of food, water and scientific experiments to the ISS.

The journey of Tenacity and its creators the Sierra Nevada Corporation is noteworthy since its announcement in 2004 the Dream chaser has gone through ups and downs, initially intended for a NASA program to transport astronauts it was surpassed by Boeing and SpaceX in 2014 with rockets and capsules that turned out to be very efficient, but in 2016 NASA recognized its potential and acquired an unmanned version to transport vital cargo to the ISS and bring essential items back to earth.

Now the Tenacity is set to become the first in a fleet of versatile and reusable spaceplanes, with three-mode internal thrusters for precise and fixed maneuvers that allow it to re-enter the Kennedy Space Center runway and are compatible with commercial runways in everyone.

It is interesting to note that the Tenacity's payload module called Shooting Star is designed to burn on re-entry and can carry up to 3,000 kg of cargo and an additional external tank, this unique feature allows the module and up to 2000 500 kg of debris to disintegrate into the atmosphere using a true natural incinerator.

Tenacity will be launched from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and will spend about 45 days docked with the ISS before returning to Earth with 2,000 kg of cargo, including crucial scientific data, Sierra Space already is preparing more Shooting Star Modules with NASA, planning at least seven cargo missions with the Tenacity potentially increasing cargo capacity and extending mission durations up to 75 days.
