The Fifth Science
So, 5th Science is a pretty nice collection, but it greatly hurts me that those are just short, low-key related stories. Because the world building has a great, a bold one would say, infinite potential. I love how he put in there so many culturally different and yet very conscious about it civilizations. Gives me those Warhammer 40k vibes, yet less simple and more interesting. Not only how wide they are in space, but also in time.
I feel that it is so heavily overshadowed by the death of the Human empire, that any emotions are drowned out by the depressing and, to be fair rather vague death of the empire (I understand that pretty much this entire book slowly opens the blinds as to why the empire eventually crumbled). One note I would add is that I feel the story "The girl and the Pit" is pretty under rated. I really enjoyed this story as it served as the viewing angle for the final stages of the empire. It definitely is not as good as some of the other stories but I feel that it is great in its own unique way. Although "The Girl and the Pit" was sad, I feel it fit very well after "Water for lunch". It was much more tame which was a nice break from the rather tense and emotional stories before it. The ending for The Girl in the Pit was almost calming, definitely somber but still beautiful in my opinion. It was the same way with Water for lunch, I feel that the ending was both happy and also scary in a unique kind of way. It is kinda like the equivalent of putting a band-aid on a broken arm. Like yeah it helps a little bit, but your arm is still broken. Still a very great story.
It's very cool to follow the plot and it's various sequences while orienting what's happening on said map. Those short stories have the potential to be a colossal series linking all the events even more to be then placed on a giant space map, just like in GOT, still mostly unknown, still mysterious and offering breathtaking oddities.
Seeing cultures collide in 5th science is my favorite thing. The way how all those races evolved in so many different aspects, generically, sociologically, technologically, whatever that is. And yet in most cases in the book, different cultures treat each other with respect, trying to understand the matters usually scientifically. It's a great concept how we might be in a million years if we don't invent anything clever for instant interstellar communication.
So yeah, this world is great, wish to see some advanced, centuries old lore linking strictly those distant orbs. Every single subject he mentioned feels like it needs a saga of extension. Would love to see HBO buying 5th science to air 20 dynasty long seasons based on this world, maybe they wouldn't even mess this up if they worked with strict cooperation.
