A Personal Manifesto for the Age of AI
My post the other day AGI Isn’t Just On The Doorstep, It’s About To Walk Right Through Our Front Door
sparked some very interesting discussions. Honestly, reading and responding to the comment section of this post was the most fun I’ve had on Hive in recent memory. The experience was a good reminder of how valuable places like Hive really are.
Hitting that - PUBLISH - button on this platform can be just the tip of the iceberg of a much larger, deeper, and more rewarding process. Those creators who don’t realize this are truly missing out. If we’re lucky, some of the articles we write become the catalyst to open up larger discussions that take on a life of their own. Perhaps these articles might stir feelings and begin an internal dialogue in the reader, getting them to think in ways they might not have thought before. In turn, the reader's thoughtful comments give us all so many different perspectives on certain topics and glimpses of different viewpoints—there’s immense value in this intellectual cross-pollination.
From the moment I first tried ChatGPT around two years ago I was already astonished by its capability (it’s way more capable now). In 2023 I used the AI platform to create an itinerary for a trip we were planning to Ireland. When I saw a detailed itinerary ChatGPT created in just a handful of seconds I realized what a beast humanity was dealing with regarding artificial intelligence.

It’s now apparent to most of us how addicted people have become to mobile phones. Evidence is everywhere—the world’s divisiveness, drivers continually drifting out of their lanes, cars sitting idle long after the traffic light turns green, people walking about like zombies staring at their devices. Now imagine everyone walking around using an AI-assistant that’s more intelligent than the smartest human. As we begin to interface with AI like we do our mobile phones at scale this will get much worse.
In the comments of my previous post about AGI linked above @kriszrokk mentioned a Cornell University study entitled Your Brain onChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task. It’s no surprise that we’ll experience temporarily decreased brain activity when we’re not using our gray-matter but what is more concerning is the long term toll this will take. I believe our collective cognitive decline probably began a while ago—the moment mobile phones were widely adopted. Everything in life is a tradeoff. For all of the convenience mobile devices and the internet have provided us they’ve also taken a fair amount of really important and valuable things away.
If you’d like a huge eye-opener, just take a gander at vintage video clips from The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.
I like to use this show as an example because Johnny didn’t just invite intellectuals and celebrities on his show he also interviewed average people. Now compare the speech, humor, and social interactions with anything on television today. After watching a few of these vintage clips compare them to any from the last decade (2015-2025). You’ll soon realize, on average, it seems clear that people in the pre-mobile phone world had larger vocabularies, greater social intelligence (especially non-verbal communication skills), and collectively a better sense of humor. Not that everything was great in these past decades, for one everything smelled like an ashtray, but watching these old clips made me nostalgic for some of the positive things from that old world I remember.

The buzz in Silicon Valley circles these last few weeks is that greater-than-human artificial intelligence could be released by OpenAI to the public this month (July of 2025). Considering even a remote possibility that this prediction is true there’s no time like the present to start thinking about and establishing personal boundaries regarding our use of AI. We may not get another chance because creating these boundaries will be far easier to do BEFORE AGI is released than it will be AFTER we begin interacting with it.
Here’s what I came up with:
My Personal Manifesto for Interacting with AGI
- Limit Over-Reliance: Consider AI as a tool, not a crutch. Challenge yourself to solve problems independently before seeking AI assistance to preserve critical thinking abilities.
- Curate Inputs Mindfully: Engage AI with clear and specific queries instead of broad ones to avoid information overload and maintain your mental clarity.
- Prioritize Original Thought: Create first drafts or ideas with zero AI input to nurture and maintain our own personal creativity and unique voice.
- Set Time Boundaries: Determine specific times for AI-interaction to prevent continuous engagement from dulling our mental initiative.
- Reflect and Validate: Cross-check AI outputs with your own reasoning or external sources to sharpen analytical skills.
- Engage in Non-Digital Creativity: Practice analog activities regularly like writing, drawing, or brainstorming to sustain creativity and mental elasticity.
- Continually Question AI Assumptions: We mustn’t put AI on a pedestal and instantly believe its answers are superior to our own ideas, intuition, and feelings. Challenge AI responses to avoid passive acceptance, preserve independent judgment, and lessen our own personal confidence.

One thing is for sure, our world is about to change very drastically and as we’re swirling around in the vortex of chaos the age of AGI will bring with it we must never forget one thing…

Often, humans blame technology without realising that technology is created by humans.
The problem is one of responsibility and ethics because we cannot turn our backs on development by saying that phones and artificial intelligence are to blame.
I think it is right that everyone should have their own key points about the use of AI because it is absurd to refuse its services when it is a valuable tool when it is used properly.
I am much more concerned about people's irresponsibility with mobile phones, it is not just that people do not pay attention on the streets or that drivers of vehicles commit infractions by paying attention to their phones instead of driving on the road.
The final straw is that familiarity and communication in the home has been lost because people are behind the phone.

I remember that trip to Ireland and the travel itinerary he made for you. At that time, I confess, I did not believe that the A. I. would become the thousand-headed monster it is today. As a teacher, I am concerned about the misuse of technology. Would you believe me if I told you that students don't want to think, do math without the aid of a device, or write manually? Last week we had the first case of a student submitting an A.I.-generated senior thesis. I. Really, I am concerned that as technology evolves, a portion of the population regresses cognitively. It's evolved so quickly it's been difficult to keep up and this rate of evolution will only continue to get faster! I was speaking with someone who works at a university a few months ago and they were telling me almost every student is using AI for their schoolwork, in some form or another. There are tools to help detect AI usage but, supposedly, the school staff is so far behind they're just now learning about them. I think AI could be a way to free ourselves of those devices. I mean, I know it sounds crazy, but I can't tell you the number of times I am curious about something while I am driving and I go to grab my phone, but then I remember I am driving. I don't have Android Auto in my truck, but it would be awesome to just be able to ask and know right away within a margin of error what the answer to my question is. I think in that regard it's enlightening more than a time suck. I like your manifesto though, those are some good points!
I think you might be correct about AI freeing us from the screens. That's what I was hoping for with that wave of AI devices that debuted a little over a year ago (the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit) but they were just too early in the development curve to be viable. OpenAI is working on a line of wearables that will probably be the first capable, AI-powered, wearable to hit the mass market. I guess Grok has already been delivered in the last OTA software update to all Tesla vehicles and the company just needs to switch it on. I'm looking forward to this. The voice mode of Grok is truly conversational now it's weird how it can trick your brain into believing you're talking to a real person. I agree, I think AI has the ability to augment our intelligence or steal it depending upon how we use it.

I simply see the recent adoption and increased use of these techs in a simple manner.
Humans have failed the Turing test.

"AI" and LLMs are problematic, because the vast majority of people don't have the adequate critical reading and research skills required to interrogate the output in any great depth.
I have used these tools with less and less frequency over the last few months, and while it is good for some basic, background information (or, as an automated reddit, which could be wrong) - I do not see great value in advancing our cognitive skills by using such a tool.
If we want to stay on the current level, sure, but if we want to be smarter and make new discoveries, no.
Yeah, so far the validity of the AI output has been biased depending on the information sources it's drawing from—until it has the ability to truly "think" and discern independent of source data. This is what's coming soon. OpenAI has very likely already achieved this but are holding off on the release until they can develop and market wearables to run it. Meta is poaching OpenAI's employees on a huge scale now that the goal has been achieved at OpenAI. Once xAI doubles their computing power with the most recent Colossus upgrade they'll probably be right up there in the top three.

Just to lighten the mood on this very serious topic, here's a Douglas Adams quote I ran into a few days ago:
"Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things".
I find your list very useful and not becoming dependent on AI is something we should all keep in mind. There is one item on your list Reflect and Validate which I believe has been lost long before AI. As we were talking on another post many people are lazy and will be perfectly satisfied with pre-digested information bites and won't bother to check. People of older generations would readily believe whatever they heard on TV, just as nowadays younger generations will not bother to question information found on social media. AI will be no different.
What I find very scary is news articles presenting AI as the highest authority - AI will teach you this or that, AI's verdict on any number of subjects. I suspect most of these articles are produced by inept journalists and not part of some sinister ploy, but the result is the same - inculcating a sense of inferiority in us poor humans who should defer to AI's superior intelligence.
Lol! I certainly feel that age-related irrelevance from time to time—it's almost like I'm speaking another language sometimes. The ability to Reflect and Validate was largely lost! A few pockets of people have relearned the skills in an effort to combat online and MSM mis/disinformation. Somehow TikTok has convinced the younger generation that it's a viable source for "news" and "truth" but I think the minute we let our guards down and blindly trust anything we open the door to being misled and controlled.

I think this might be the most important thing in all of this to remember. We mustn't view AI as our infallible superior. If this happens we're toast.
