Iceland’s newest Volcano Part 2 – End of Grindavik?
What has been feared in November 2023 has become reality. The volcano erupted once again, this time in close proximity to the town of Grindavik, a mere 400 meters outside the city boundaries. Authorities took measures to construct barriers around the power station north of the town. Unfortunately, the eruption occurred between the power plant and the city, with no existing barriers. Despite the presence of a berm intended to safeguard the town, the fissure cut right through it. Compounded by geological factors directing the lava towards the town and eventually the ocean, the situation appears grim. Significant portions of the town may face destruction, including the likely devastation of the commercial harbor. The primary focus of the authorities now is on the evacuation of the population for the second time.
