Why do animals die in caves?🌏🚩 / Por que los animales mueren en las cuevas?🧭(En-Es)

Hello, fellow adventurers! Today we’re off to explore some caves in Portugal to unravel a mystery—one that already has a scientific explanation, though there’s nothing quite like verifying the facts in person. In today’s blog post and video, we’re heading to the Serra de Montejunto to explore one or more of the area’s major caves. Just how dangerous are they? Can we explore them? Will we find any trapped animals? Let’s find out...📍🚙

¡Hola, amigos aventureros! ¿Podemos explorarlas? ¿Habrá algún animal atrapado? Veremos...📸🏞️

Many prehistoric animals became trapped in the cavities of the Serra de Montejunto, primarily due to the geological characteristics of the region's karst landscape. The mountain range features nearly a hundred caves and chasms (algares) formed by rainwater dissolving the limestone rock. These formations often acted as vertical natural traps where animals accidentally fell or sought refuge from harsh weather and predators, unable to escape.

I believe that caves all over the world undergo a similar process: an animal gets trapped, is unable to escape, and ends up fossilized for centuries, serving as scientific evidence. It is known that injured animals often seek shelter in caves to try to recover; therefore, we can conclude that Montejunto is a natural reserve where interesting discoveries can be made. The downside? The caves are difficult to locate📸🚙

Today was a mix of many things. The morning forecast called for cool weather, so I brought a jacket along. As it turned out, midday caught me on the mountain and the heat was brutal—feeling like 37 degrees or higher. When I reached the summit—at 600 meters—the wind was incredibly strong**. It** seems you can never truly prepare for what lies ahead on this mountain. Aside from that, the scenery was beautiful.📸🚙

  • We consider it an extreme expedition due to the dangers posed by the route.📍

  • Very high fire risk in summer—take note of this.📍

  • high risk of twisting an ankle or falling into an underground cave📍

  • A physically very demanding linear trail of approximately 8 km,📍

  • You need to come equipped with a sun hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, and food; there is nowhere nearby to stock up.📍

I have now discovered a cave called Fontela—which is not very deep—located several kilometers from the original Montejunto site. My goal was to link the two caves to unravel the mystery of these natural traps; animal fossils dating back thousands of years were reportedly found in both, and today, they are still inhabited by other wildlife, including bats.📸📍

The discovery of snow leopard and giant brown bearskins within caves supports the theory that historic animals became trapped due to a lack of escape routes. In contrast, modern sites feature man-made openings and stairways, though current high levels of human traffic prevent wild animals from inhabiting these areas today. You can read more about cave exploration updates and refinements.📸🌏

I went in to explore it, and to my surprise, this particular cave had two exits leading outside—meaning that if an animal got trapped, it could potentially get out. The issue, however, is that reaching one of those exits would require squeezing through a very small hole, so it seems unlikely to work! For instance, a wild boar isn't exactly an expert climber—though a fox might be—so I'd have to conclude that, yes... animals could indeed get trapped and die in here.📍🌏

And to wrap up the post on a high note—winning the "gold medal," haha—I escaped the cave not by using the stairs, but through the narrow tunnels. I have to admit it was a bit scary and got the adrenaline pumping; since I’m no expert at this, your brain starts thinking you’re going to get trapped. Still, I wouldn't do anything that put my life at risk.🏞️📍

Good morning, my dear @biologistbrito. As always, you’ve brought us another adventure centered on a mystery—though this time, it isn't a historical one. Based on your account and the photos I see—with those incredibly intricate parts—a certain saying comes to mind in response to your question: "Curiosity killed the cat."

It’s great that it wasn't all about death; the fact that the cave serves as a refuge for animals like bats adds a lovely touch to the post.

Sending you a big hug!
