The oldest city in Portugal🌍 / La ciudad mas antigua de Portugal🚩 (En-Es)

I had the opportunity to travel to Guimarães, a city where it is said that Portugal was born as a nation, a magical place full of history with a beautiful castle where the dukes lived, however while I was researching Guimarães was not the oldest city in Portugal and instead it appeared to me as a reference: "Ponte de Lima", and of course I thought why not visit this place in the north of the country and discover why it is listed as the oldest city? Make yourself comfortable and enjoy my experience!⛰️🌎

Romanesque influences🚩⛰️/Influencias Romanicas🌎🧭

The whole history of "Ponte de Lima" dates back to the Roman era, there are some documents dating back to the time of the reconquests 910-1100 where it is stated that the Romans inhabited the area possibly in the 1st century AD, passing a medieval bridge there is a story of a battle fought by a Roman troop, we will see that later! The city is quiet, it is not crowded with tourists and it has many free parking lots, as well as several places of historical interest to visit!🧭🌎

Legend of the Lethes River🚩⛰️/Leyenda del rio lethes🌎🧭

the river "lethes" was the name that the Romans called the river Lima, there is a legend that the commander "Decius Junius Brutus" fought a battle on the south bank of the bridge, but the soldiers were afraid to cross the river because they thought it was a hot river like those of hot springs, in view of the fear of the soldiers the commander crossed the river with his horse and called each soldier by name to motivate him to cross as well. Of course I want to clarify that the bridge is medieval and did not exist at that time! This is believed to have been in 146 BC.🌎🧭

Church "Santo Antonio da Torre Velha"🕌⛰️/Iglesia "Santo antonio da torre velha"🌎🧭

It seemed very modern to me and with those touches of colorful tiles it gave me the impression that it was not a medieval church and I was right... It is a small church that dates back to the 18th century and was built to guide pilgrims who do the "Camino de Santiago" route, the church was renovated in the 19th century and is very pretty inside, in fact it is among my top 10 churches in Portugal in comparison to its small size.🧭🌎

The most important pilgrimage in the world🧭🚩

The "Camino de Santiago" pilgrimage is the most popular in Europe and I dare say in the world. People from various countries travel more than 500 km to reach the church "Santiago da Compostela" to honor the apostle Santiago. If I'm not mistaken, it is a tradition that has existed since the post-medieval era, and the village of "Ponte de Lima" is a mandatory stop to finish the path! That yellow sign indicates that it is the path you must take to get to Spain.🧭📸

See what I meant? Some shops make decorations and souvenirs on the Camino de Santiago theme, meaning you can order the flag of your country and some accessories that the pilgrims carry, like the famous clam, symbol of the pilgrimage of purity. Then there are some monuments dedicated to royal figures who passed through the city and which you can take photos of.🌎🚩

Historic center🕌⛰️/Centro historico🌎🧭

After leaving my car in the main square we crossed the bridge, I won't talk much about it because I'll make a post with the drone! We arrived at the city center and what an impression I got, everything is very clean and well-kept, a lot of medieval and gothic architecture everywhere, there is a restaurant area with a variety of shops and stores for all tastes, there are several souvenir shops, it would be good to buy a local wine.🧭🚩

Why is it the oldest city?🕌⛰️/Porque es la ciudad mas antigua?🌎🧭

The logical explanation of why Ponte de Lima is the oldest city in Portugal is because it officially received the charter of town or "fuero de vilha" two years before Portugal was considered a legitimate country! This happened in the year 1125 knowing that Portugal was considered a country in 1127! In other words, legally I created a post on the first city of Portugal hehe it is now confirmed.🚩🕌

Remains of a medieval tower🏰⛰️/Restos de torre medieval🌎🧭

This tower is when the village went through the medieval era, there were built the famous bridge and a wall which remains intact until today and thanks to the tower you can delimit the city fence between the 13th and 14th centuries, there are two interesting things to see in the tower first that written there that says "cheias" that is the levels where the river reached when it overflowed, that is, in the year 1909 the water rose more than 3 meters high, literally covering all the houses in the village, and then we see a beautiful tile making reference to one of the battles fought in Ponte de Lima by "Cabras sao Senhor".🌎🚩

This is another of the towers that are preserved in the city wall, when the city was fortified it had six entrances and exits to the outside, all duly guarded, it was built in 1511 by order of King D. Manuel🧭🚩

Where to eat?🏰🥩/Donde comer?🌎🧭

There are plenty of restaurants in the city, but they are really expensive. If you don't want to spend too much, visit "o floral da sorte" (the floral restaurant) where they have a daily menu for 11 euros with a drink included, while in another restaurant you will spend 80 euros for two people! We ordered some beef bites, ufff, too good!🧭🚩

This is the central church of the town and therefore the oldest one, it was consecrated in the year 1276, that is, in the middle of the 13th century, dedicated to Christianity and in a romantic style! I really liked the inside, everything is very pretty and has a mysterious air, the part where the Christ is with gold is too beautiful!⛰️🧭
