In my opinion, the best views of Funchal unfold from the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint.

From here, the city lies spread out before you as if on the palm of your hand. It cascades amphitheater-like down the slopes of the surrounding mountains, with houses pressed tightly together, climbing ever higher and filling every terrace and ledge.

The slopes are steep, covered in dense greenery, and the peaks are almost always wrapped in clouds — even on clear days, these white «caps» hover above the ridges, giving the panorama a soft, airy depth. Red roofs, white walls, and green patches of gardens and parks all blend into an almost mosaic-like pattern.

I love panoramic views and always seek out the highest vantage point when I arrive somewhere new. Madeira is generous in this regard: even in its capital, it offers vistas that can make you fall for the island at first sight.

Madeira seems built for those who prefer to see the world from above.

Its roads are not mere routes but cinematic ribbons winding through deep ravines, and scenic overlooks appear more often than gas station signs. Every pass, every turn might suddenly reveal ocean-hanging waterfalls or villages clinging to cliff faces. Even if you came here on business, a simple stroll along Funchal’s waterfront will soon convince you: sooner or later, you’ll feel the urge to explore — and first and foremost, to head into the mountains.

And trust me, it’s worth it.

I heard a lot about Madeira. In Venezuela, there are a lot of people from there. But these pictures say much more. It's really nice there!
