We probably have the lockdowns to thank for this one. Much like the sudden advancement in streaming video technology ushered in by Zoom, the camera companies have finally figured out one of the most no-brainer things in the history of camera technology.

The entire video content creation/streaming world sighed a collective "duh!" following the announcements by Canon, Sony and others, that we will soon be able to use our cameras as webcams! You can already do it, and I have, but you have had to buy a video capture device. The whole thing has been kind of hit and miss.

The companies will release software that will enable these cameras to simply be plugged into your computer via USB, and have them work as webcams natively. This is much like any other dedicated webcam works currently.

The question I have is this. Cleary these devices have always been capable of doing this - otherwise they'd have to introduce the feature in a future camera. So why oh why had they not enabled it this whole time? Perhaps they just never thought of it? I find that hard to believe considering how much money people have spent on these video capture intermediaries.

Perhaps that's just it! They were making more money with the status quo. However, now with the pandemic and a lot more video streaming happening, there is probably now a demand for it like never before. I wouldn't be surprised if a top executive at Sony tried to stream with his fancy A7s camera but was told he couldn't just "plug it in and get going". That would kick things off for sure.
