How to Conserve Energy and Electricity



  • Adjust light use: turn off lights when you are not in the room and minimizing unnecessarily light bulbs and installing higher watt bulbs.

  • Let natural light in during the day: open curtains and drapes.

  • Install energy efficient lightbulbs where less energy is lost to heat. Swap incandescent bulbs for LED

  • Switch off appliances on standby

  • Install smart power strips.

  • Fill up your washing machine and dishwashers before running them.

  • Wash clothes in cold water.

  • Dry clothes and dishes outside or air dry.

  • Upgrade to efficient appliances.

  • Install a programmable thermostat.

  • Turn your refrigerator down a little.

  • Eliminate drafts.

  • Use celling fans instead of air conditioners.

  • Use doors and curtains to keep out the cold or the sun.

  • Insulate your water heater

  • Unplug and defrost your freezer monthly.

  • Maintain appliances

  • Maintain energy insulation

  • Use area carpets on tiles

  • Wear slippers and sweaters in the winter.

  • Use a pressure cooker.

  • Charge your computers or car at night

  • wash clothes at night


I live in an apartment, and so there are limited things I can do to save on power and electricity, but I also live downtown, and this means I walk, scoot, or bus to most places and can shop by foot.

Living in a smaller space than most houses, my family also uses less energy.

I stay healthy and fit and do not over use the healthcare system.

I can turn off lights in rooms I am not in . My room has its own thermostat, and I can use blankets instead of turning it up.

I can wear sweaters and slippers when it is cold.
