Ketogenic Diet and the GABAergic hypothesis // Dieta Cetogênica e a hipótese GABAergica

As I have done with so many other subjects, I am here to learn as I write about a topic, in this case it is a topic that I really need to learn, to apply this hypothesis to my reality. The ketogenic diet and its psychiatric (and also aesthetic) benefits. Due to the fact that the ketogenic diet is a very vast and complex topic, I decided to break it down but not necessarily starting from the obvious, which would be to do a step-by-step on the topic or something like that. I preferred just to choose a specific detail regarding the possible benefits and go deeper into it. I will do the same with all the other ramifications of the diet, talking about countless details, but each thing in its own time. But I won't let you down, so here is a short paragraph about what the Ketogenic Diet is.

The ketogenic diet is an eating plan consisting of a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, with the goal of inducing a state of ketosis in the body. This diet has been associated with several health benefits, such as weight loss, reduced inflammation, improved blood sugar control in diabetic patients, and even reduced risk of certain types of cancer. Scientific studies have shown that the ketogenic diet can be an effective strategy for weight loss and short-term improvement of metabolic health, as well as a safe option for healthy people. One of the hypotheses being investigated as a possible mechanism of action of the ketogenic diet is the gabaergic hypothesis, which suggests that the diet may increase the activity of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain.

GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that plays an important role in regulating neuronal activity. It is produced from glutamic acid by the gabaergic system, which includes gabaergic neurons and glial cells. GABA binds to specific receptors on nerve cells, causing a reduction in neuronal activity and decreased excitability of the central nervous system. The gabaergic hypothesis suggests that the ketogenic diet may increase the availability of GABA in the brain, which may lead to a number of beneficial health effects. This is because the ketogenic diet is high in fats and low in carbohydrates, which leads to a reduction in glucose production in the liver and an increased use of ketone bodies as an energy source by the brain. Ketone bodies, such as beta-hydroxybutyrate, are produced from the breakdown of fats in the liver and are used by the brain as an energy source when glucose levels are low. Studies have shown that beta-hydroxybutyrate can increase GABA production in the brain, which may explain some of the beneficial effects of the ketogenic diet on mental and neurological health. In addition, the ketogenic diet may also increase the expression of genes that are involved in the production and transport of GABA in the brain. Animal studies have shown that the ketogenic diet can increase the expression of genes such as GAD65 and VIAAT, which are involved in GABA synthesis and transport, respectively. This may lead to an increase in GABA availability in the brain and a reduction in neuronal activity, which may help explain some of the beneficial effects of the ketogenic diet on brain health.

Although the gabaergic hypothesis is still being investigated, there is evidence to suggest that the ketogenic diet may positively affect the gabaergic system. Human studies have shown that the ketogenic diet may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients with mental disorders, such as bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In addition, the ketogenic diet may also improve cognition and executive function in healthy individuals and in patients with Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. However, there are still many questions that need to be answered to fully understand the relationship between the ketogenic diet and the gabaergic system. For example, it is still unclear how the ketogenic diet affects GABA production and activity in different areas of the brain and how these effects translate into health benefits.
