Biohacking Series: N Acetylcysteine - NAC

(Edited)

Today I'm going to talk a little bit about a very fascinating supplement that is little used by people, perhaps because it has this "syrup name" and gives the impression of being a medicine for a problem and not a preventive and strengthening substance! This substance is N Acetylcysteine, or NAC for those closest to you.

Source

Traditionally, you find NAC in the pharmacy as a cough syrup to clean the lung mucus, and interestingly, it is the substance also used to reverse acetaminophen poisoning. But a deeper look at the NAC will show us that, primarily it is a "semi-essential amino acid", cysteine is found in protein foods like chicken, turkey, cheese and some vegetables, meaning it is something we naturally consume, but not level not always satisfactory, especially if you are a microwave ready food person, infinite masses and synthetic liquids. N-Acetylcysteine is just a version optimized for absorption of this substance and in greater amounts to give your body an "upgrade".

The benefits of NAC in supplementation are immense although they are "subliminal" on a grosser point of view, but just take a stroll through the latest research on the substance and notice how powerful it is in its benefits. Starting with the replenishment and intensification of the production of Glutathione, one of the most (or most) important antioxidants in the body, which is involved from taking care of problem cells, inflammation to aiding neurological balance. It is also a brutal tool for cleansing and correcting the livers and kidneys, usually helping even to detoxify the constant and chronic use of drugs that damage these organs. With the correction of Glutathione naturally there is an improvement in immunity, in addition to its traditional power to help the lungs, improving the proportion of oxygen absorbed by the respiratory system.

We are still in its infancy in the study of NAC in psychiatry, but it is already known with scientific evidence that NAC helps to regulate levels of glutamate, which is often out of step in people with bipolar, borderline, psychosis, among several other psychiatric problems. NAC has also been extensively studied to alleviate relapses and withdrawal crises in cocaine users. Likewise, benefits for cigarette or marijuana cravings were observed.

Studies commonly show benefits at the standard dose of 600mg to 1200mg NAC per day, but there are numerous anecdotal reports on Reddit for example that demonstrate supposed incredible benefits with higher doses. I particularly consume 600 to 1200mg per day, in cycles (that is, for a month, for example and then the next month no), but there is no need to follow a withdrawal cycle, it is not a substance that has any harmful effects and does not generate tolerance much less dependency. There is literally only benefit from using NAC.

That's quite informative post about NAC. I used NAC, like you mentioned for breaking up the mucus. This was also very popular in Indonesia to be included as covid-19 treatment. But since I eat oatmeal, eggs, and even sunflower seeds regularly, I never really cared much about it. Have you personally used it too?

Interesting to know about this use of NAC in Covid's treatment in your country, @macchiata! Very smart, as it has serious potential for help besides the fact that it's good for immunity! I've been using it, yes, I've known it for a few years, I've been using cycles for some time! Thanks for the comment!

At a glance, I taught you will be talking about re-engineering viral loads and the like, but it is focused on medicine. Nonetheless, it was a good read. !discovery 25

Dude, I don't know if I understand what you mean by this re-engineering viral loads, maybe something to do with Covid? If so, I've even heard that there is some good evidence of NAC's benefits against Covid, but I honestly didn't go into it. However, there is a complement that deserves space. However, if you are talking about another topic that has nothing to do with it, then I am lost! LOL
Thanks for the comment!

Great article. Do you know if there are any known side effects as a result of NAC suplementation?

This is quite an eye opener. I will have to check with the local medicine stores around here to see some cough syrups with NAC. I just hope it doesn't exist in combination with contents that should not be taken ordinarily or with potential side effects if used long term.

I've got a bit of concerns with the images used in your post. They don't seem to be from free sources. Can you double check to confirm the free to use feature or just replace them with free versions? You are not in any way obligated to do this but it might improve your chances of getting supported by the community account.
