lobster shells inspire stronger concrete structures

Researchers from Melbourne's RMIT University have observed that 3D printing of concrete mimicking the patterns in a lobster's shell significantly increases the strength of the resulting structure.

The concrete is reinforced with steel fibres as it is printed following twisted patterns. This approach can be used to form complex structures without the need for moulds without compromising the required strength.
