STEMng Digest: facts over fiction

Authored by @gentleshaid

Information powers the Web and the Web powers the world. As content creators, we are not only passing information but shaping how information consumers see and perceive issues. There is an adage that says that a lie told repeatedly would begin to sound the truth. Hence, it is pertinent to always share factual and verifiable information, especially when it comes to science (as long as it is not sci-fi). Remember, science is all about our existence as humans. Welcome to a new edition of the STEMng digest.

Who are we?

STEMng is the Nigerian sub-community of the stemsocial community, a community that has been supporting stem authors on the hive blockchain for about four years now. While stemsocial focuses on everyone irrespective of their country, STEMng is specifically for Nigerians. The best of stem contents published by Nigerians on the Hive blockchain is highlighted on weekly basis.

As usual, we have gone through the thicks and thins and selected the top posts of all the stem posts published by Nigerians on the Hive blockchain in the past week. We genuinely wish you read, engage, and support the author as much as you can.

  1. @gentleshaid: Reproductive habits in snakes

Just like the last edition, the first post featured this week has everything to do about snakes. This time, it borders around the reproductive habits of the reptile. There are a lot of misconceptions locally when it comes to how snakes reproduce and only continuous education can put the misconceptions to rest. Inspired by a discussion on Twitter, the author of this post elucidated on the different modes of producing baby snakes by their parents.

2.@hillaryisidore: Unraveling the diseases surrounding covid 19: what you may not know

For those that may not know, covid19 itself is not a disease but a virus that is capable of entering the body systems of the host and take over the genetic system, albeit gradually. Taking over the genetic system of a human by the virus may elicit different symptoms in different people, and most especially, the effects may be pronounced on multiple organs. The author of this post tried to elucidate more on the most common diseases associated with being invaded by the covid19 virus.

  1. @mistural: Extraction Of Palm Kernel Oil From Palm Fruit - The Step By Step Process

Palm oil is a household name as far as Nigeria is concerned. However, the same cannot be said for the palm fruit from which palm oil is derived. The author in this post discussed the process by which palm oil can be extracted from palm fruits on a small scale. This provides an insight into how palm oil is produced on a large scale.

4.@cyprianj: Face Mask use and Its General Effects on Human Body and Physiological System

The covid19 pandemic seems to be easing off in many parts of the world but the subject of nose masks will be here for a while. The brouhaha that has been surrounding the use of nose masks in some quarters can be political on one hand, but not without valid medical reasons on the other. Read this post on the effects of nose masks in order to understand more.

5.@sam9999: LBP-A pain that can make a grown man cry!!!

Round of this week's edition is a post that virtually everyone can relate to. Low back pain is a condition that has or will inflict almost everyone at some point in their lifetime. Just what could cause it and how can it be tackled when it happens? The author decided to educate us all.

If you are a content creator on Hive and wondering how you can participate in the community, all you need to do would to:

  • Write original content or make a video
  • Make it as interesting as possible
  • Adopt beautiful layout/formatting
  • Personalize your writing (it is social blogging, remember)
  • Use copyright-free images
  • Include references (facts over fiction)
  • to increase the likelihood of being discovered, use the tag 'stemng'.

Ahaha! This was a long time I didn't see this "fact over fiction" motto. I tag @mobbs who wants to get rid of it (for probably good reasons).
