Technology associated with intelligent sensors installed in agricultural fields to avoid ecological disasters

The current technology is betting on generating a production system as far as agriculture is concerned in an efficient way and with precision in its activities.

The proposal requires the installation of intelligent sensors in the agricultural fields with the objective of helping to avoid or minimize environmental disasters that can commonly occur in the fields when agricultural activities are carried out.

Even these sensors are an innovative technology that goes beyond avoiding any ecological disaster, so there are secondary objectives that include optimizing natural resources, since, for example, agricultural activities involve risk systems for the sowing of certain crops that are basic to human nutrition. However, many times these irrigation systems involve errors that cause fresh water to be lost and wasted, which is so important in these times when fresh water is scarce and is an indispensable resource.

A frequent example presented in agricultural fields is that when it rains, just moments later the ideal time to start irrigation is not known because the humidity under the soil is unknown.

However, thanks to the technology of these sensors, farmers can know the exact time to start irrigation after a rain, because with the sensor you can detect if there is moisture under the ground.

How do these sensors work?

First of all, it must be clear that these sensors work as a network of sensors that work individually, the great thing about these sensors is that you can monitor and supervise the most important parameters in agricultural activities in real time, among these variables stand out:

  • Amount of water in the soil.
  • Amount of salinity in the soil.
  • Soil temperature.

When a farmer has the availability of data based on these variables in real time, it allows him to reduce water consumption considerably, for example.

These soil sensors become a very important technological device for the farmer, allowing the right water to be poured to the plant at the right time, this is a very advantageous part that was not available in the past before having this technology.

Not only is there a single range of sensors, in addition to the soil sensor there are others such as the environmental sensor, tensiometer and quadrilateral. The soil sensor, as I mentioned before, has a tremendous importance because it quantifies the most important variables of the soil and that in turn gives us an indication of knowing the exact time of watering.

The tensiometer, for example, measures the effort made by the roots of the plantations in order to obtain the humidity of the soil, while the quad-meter measures the amount of fertilizer needed in the irrigation network.

The environmental sensor has the ability to measure the climate, temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure, with this we will even have the advantage of being able to tell the farmer what the dew temperature is.

Through the environmental sensor the farmer is notified when the plant has dew, to avoid any possible danger in this respect.

Are these sensors easy to install?

As shown in the image above, it is easy to install, and not only that, but the farmer can consult detailed reports on irrigation and historical data to corroborate what happened in past seasons, download data, even the farmer can create alerts from the information provided by these sensors that can notify if the soil is dry or if there is a frost.

Conclusion and contributions

I will conclude this post with one of the issues that concerns me most for being an environmental manager, and it is only the relationship that this technology has with the environmental impact that this generates.

Thanks to the use of this sensor technology for agricultural activity, farmers could have saved about 333,000 cubic liters of water.

This technological innovation gives us a precision analysis that helps us predict whether a crop is capable of producing more, with higher quality and at a lower price.

If natural resources are saved and agricultural processes are optimized, we will surely be contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly environment.

It is impressive the amount of variables that can be detected by the soil sensors, as you say is a great advantage for the farmer because he can know the exact time of irrigation.

Greetings @sandracarrascal and thank you for sharing this interesting information.
