Working with corals🧠 / Trabajando con corales🐟🐠🦐

If you have wondered what kind of living being is a coral then this post is the one for you! Today while I receive some corals in my work I wanted to take the opportunity to talk a little about them and classify them, the corals look like plants, rocks and anything but an animal! but in reality they ARE ANIMALS, very simple that play a very important role in our planet!🤩🤩

There is a great diversity of corals, you cannot imagine the amount of designs and colors, but they all have the same ecological function, around 2,550 species of corals have been discovered on the planet! If you observe a coral, the first thing that comes to your mind is that it is a rock, right? in reality they are very many animals grouped in (colonies) that are located on the seabed (reef). And of course, with such fantastic structures and designs, corals are used as a home for thousands of marine animals.🤔😮😶😶😶😶😮🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😶

The corals belong to the cnidaria phylum, anthozoa class, many of them are grouped in the Hexacorallia and Octocorallia classes, which are those famous corals called "fire corals" that are many of them dangerous!😮😮

I mentioned that these animals were very basic, they do not have eyes, nose, limbs! they do not have a backbone either! As cnidarians are radially symmetrical, this means that their anamotic structure is positioned under a central axis, the body of a coral is usually formed by a polyp that is a tube-shaped animal, with a mouth at one end and some tentacles. that serve for food!💥💥😃😃😃😃😃💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

img_20210824_191435.jpg

Another structure that is important is the corallite, which is basically calcium carbonate and its main function is to protect the polyp that has a soft structure and easy to suffer injuries! Because of the way a coral moves, it is classified as (sessile), it means that they cannot move from one place to another!😍😍

But not all corals also have a carbonate structure, there are others that are simply soft, and very simple with an oral cavity and tentacles, which we could say that this digestive system is the simplest in the entire animal kingdom!😍😍
Mas nem todos os corais também têm estrutura carbonática, há outros que são simplesmente moles, e muito simples com cavidade oral e tentáculos, o que poderíamos dizer que este sistema digestivo é o mais simples de todo o reino animal!😶😶

Describing the size and coloration is a somewhat complex task because they vary depending on the species, for example there are corals of 1mm in length and others that can measure more than 25cm, in colonies the corals can measure more than 4 meters in height, they have the particularity to grow one meter per year! and unbelievably there are collars so big and spectacular that they can be seen from space!🤩🤩

Corals do not have their own coloration, let's say that the carbonate structure is not what determines the pigmentation of a coral! what produces the color are algae called zooxanthellae, these organisms live in soft tissue and give colors like brown, green, orange! although there are also some corals with external tissue that have different shades being the predominant blue!🙂🙂

Corals are from tropical and subtropical waters, some have such impressive adaptations that they can survive in polar regions, due to the famous zooxanthellae organisms, corals have to receive solar rays to survive therefore they are not located at great depths between 40-60 meters! BUT as nature is so capricious some corals can live more than 6000 meters without the need for light! amazing, right?💥💥💦🌊🌊

These animals have a somewhat interesting behavior since despite being sessile and not being able to migrate anywhere as they are colonies, they behave like a single living being! everything here is thought, zooxanthellae are not parasites, on the contrary there is a symbiosis where both organisms receive a benefit! polyps are mostly nocturnal, so they hunt at night!🙂🙂

The main problem affecting the reefs is global warming, the sudden change in temperature causes stress on the corals which can lead to expelling the zooxanthellae and they end up dying from diseases and poor nutrition! Also the excess of zooxanthellae causes stress in these animals, therefore the chemical value of the water that changes due to contamination is another harmful factor for our coral friends! ONLY WE LEFT TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE OUR REEFS, it is expected that in 30 years 30% of the corals of the Australian barrier could disappear!🛑📛

Interesting read and awesome images. I understand that you were trying to show the diversity of the corals by putting that many images but I feel this post would have been better with fewer images. This is just my opinion.

Having said that, I know that there are two body forms in the Cnidarians, the medusa and the polyp. I just want to ask if there are corals with the medusa body form as opposed to the polyp.

Also, I think the biggest threat to coral reefs lies in the acidification of our oceans. The acidified water reacts with the calcium carbonate shell to give off carbon dioxide to the environment resulting in the bleaching of the reef.

Of course my friend, that's what the recommendations and opinions are about! And I will always be open to things that improve the quality and understanding of the reader! Read a bit about how warming is the main cause because the temperature problem is that it stresses the coral in many ways! It would be interesting to go deeper into acidification! Maybe there is because corals also have soft bodies without having calcium carbonate in their structure! Almost certainly yes! I have to search for the species! And well thanks for reading and commenting my friend! I was receiving corals in the store where I work and it occurred to me to post about them xD HUGS !!
