Hi! again walking around here to leave a post of my favorite animals "the feathered ones", I decided to take my telephoto lens and go to the coast to analyze and compare the behavior of the common egret! there are few studies on her behavior in the books! I had the impression of finding a community bird that would share territory with other water birds, but what I discovered is interesting! join me to learn about Egretta garzetta and delight us with some beautiful photos that I have prepared for you!😁😮
BIOLOGY / BIOLOGIA💖🦜🐦🦚😮
In the recently flooded expanses of rice fields, lakes, rivers and it is quite common to observe large groups of birds that wander through the mud to capture worms, insects and batrachians. Among them there are stylized and completely white herons that stir the water with their feet; They are common egrets, a species that is experiencing an expansion equivalent to that of the rice field, a crop on which they seem to depend more closely than other herons.😶😶
These birds are very intelligent, something that I call my intention is that they only reach the bay when the tide goes out and small ponds form, they know that many fish are trapped in these bodies of water and it is a great opportunity to feed! It has an excellent view that allows you to observe small animals of only centimeters through the water!😊😊
It is a medium-sized heron, with always white plumage, with long black legs — except for the fingers, which are yellow — and a long, black, dagger-shaped beak. The reproductive individual exhibits a pair of elongated feathers on the nape, a group of filamentous and frayed feathers on the chest and back and, mainly in the courtship season, a small area of bare skin located in front of the eye, which acquires an intense yellowish.🤩🤩
Non-breeding specimens lack the aforementioned ornaments, and the bare skin fragment next to the eye is, where appropriate, bluish-gray or greenish in color. The young, on the other hand, is similar to the non-reproductive one, but with a somewhat brownish bill. In flight it is completely white and adopts the characteristic silhouette of the ardeidae, with the neck gathered in the shape of an "S" and the stretched legs protruding behind the short tail.🙂🙂
Silent outside the colonies, on other occasions (mainly in flight) it emits a kind of hoarse and dull bark: wuorj or juaooj. It inhabits coastal areas and areas of shallow waters, as is common. They nest in tall trees, shrubs, caniçais, bushes, rocks, falésias and cavities.🤗🤗
Omnivorous species, whose food consists of fish, insects, amphibians, crustaceans, earthworms, snails, small mammals and reptiles. These herons feed individually and actively defend their feeding places, but they gather in large colonies to rest. Also in the breeding season they form colonies of considerable size, often mixed with other species, the couples being monogamous. They lay for one year, with the blue-green eggs becoming white over time. They rarely vocalize outside colonies and do not recognize partners outside nesting sites.🙂🙂
BEHAVIOUR / COMPORTAMIENTO💖🦜🐦🦚
I did some monitors for 3 days, and I was surprised because I had already read a little about its behavior, but I had not seen such a territorial bird! Basically each specimen chooses a feeding area that according to my calculation consisted of about 50 meters, then I observed how they moved with slow steps between the bay so as not to scare off their prey, they made small movements with their legs to remove the sand and expose some mollusks !🙂🙂
The bird spent an average of 10 minutes in its territory, if it did not feed it moved to another area, but always away from another specimen, when 2 herons met in one area it observed two types of behavior, or it stole some food that another had captured or fight to steal territory! but I never saw sharing the same space!😶😶
They do not approach people and they are very shy, when I approached more than 15 meters they would move away from me! so photographing them was not easy, it required a lot of patience! always active, rarely do you notice them inactive! with other species they tend to be more peaceful! I saw some feeding next to seagulls and they did not attack them!🙂🤔
This is a sequence that fascinated me because I managed to capture it all! a specimen had caught a small fish and suddenly another one approached at great speed to tie it up and steal its food! at the same time I displace the individual who occupied the territory! the fights are not usually to the death and there is no great damage! it's basically just intimidation!😮😮
THE BIRD THAT LOSES THE COMBAT RETREATS😲
FEED CAPTURE👀🐡🐟🦩
When it comes to fish they have to perform some maneuvers to swallow the fish! remember that birds do not have lips or arms, so the birds that fish generally throw the fish into the air to swallow them! these herons make a sideways movement to bring the fish to the base of the beak! I saw some that the fish fell and they managed to catch them in the air! they are very agile!😮😮
ELEGANCE ON THE FLIGHT👀🛫🛫🦩
Egretta garzetta can weigh up to half a kilo, so seeing them fly is a feat of nature, they must first give a run before raising their body, despite being large birds they can maneuver and land gracefully!✅✅
STATUS IN PORTUGAL👀📕📕🦩
The little egret is mostly resident and can be seen in Portugal throughout the year. IT'S most abundant on the coast, especially in the middle south of the territory and is relatively rare inland north, especially in altitude zones. Nests colonially with important colonies in the Ribatejo, Alentejo and Algarve.💖💖
