Greetings science addicts! today I bring a small post to describe a species that I found in stagnant muddy water, many people are afraid of the word Nematode because the famous parasites are included here, but in reality a large part of these small animals are not dangerous and fulfill a important function in our ecosystem! We are going to see its main characteristics and I will also show you some videos to see it in the water.👨‍💻🕵️‍♂️📚

What is a nematode?🙇‍♂️🧠 / Que es un nematodo?👨‍💻👨‍🏫

Whenever we try to look for "free-living" Nematodes, we usually come across small species not reaching one centimeter! Studying them is quite a challenge because I was always forced to mobilize them by reducing the flow of water to be able to photograph their morphology, they are known to move like "a snake", the most interesting part of nematodes is that many are NOT parasites and they walk around feeding on detritus.🌏🧫🔬

I always wanted to see an annelid and a nematode under the microscope to see the difference and then I achieved my goal! one of the characteristics of nematodes is that their body is not segmented like that of earthworms that are easy to confuse between them but when we train ourselves seeing many species we end up easily differentiating them!🧠👁📚

Monhystera similis?🙇‍♂️🧠👨‍💻👨‍🏫

You can search my publications if you want to know more about nematodes since I dedicated a post about them, for now I will focus on this particular species, the (Monhystera similis), it is a very frequent species in almost all waters, this animal has a smooth and very resistant cuticle with sparsely arranged body setae! and has a "very delicate cefalica".🧠📚📚

The description of my microorganism identification book describes this species with the dark intestine "almost black" which coincides with the photographed species! It has a tail with "thread secretion glands".🤯🙇‍♂️👨‍💻

It does not reach a centimeter in length but it is not microscopic either with a lot of attention we can see it swim or bury itself in the mud! As you can see, I got this species while cleaning the mud from my aquarium! the fish usually eat them they are harmless!🕵️‍♂️👨‍🏫🌏

According to this portal of species records, the months where they were captured as you can see stand out: (July-September), apparently they are more frequent in summer! and it is interesting because I captured these specimens that were more than 10 in the month of September! apparently the species likes warm temperatures.📚🙇‍♂️

Observing the mouth of nematodes is very interesting because all species have accessories that vary depending on their diet and life cycle! This species as it is "scavenger" does not present in its mouth any adaptation in its cuticle that allows it to adhere to a host!

DNA is an organization to foster and DENSIFY NATURE-APPRECIATION which aims to establish REPORTS OF BIODIVERSITY DATA that is contributed by all of us Hiveans and subsequently cataloged.

Therefore DNA searches for HIGH-QUALITY posts that aim to DESCRIBE and determine the BIODIVERSITY AROUND YOU with added EXPLANATIONS and INFORMATION. For these informative posts they offer a CURATION SERVICE using the @dna.org account. It is also a CURATION TRAIL. Just add the #dna TAG if you think that any of your posts is what they are looking for.
