MICROSCOPY OF A CAELIFERA (Orthoptera) 👨‍🎓🦗🦗🔬🧫

avatar
The caelifers or in Latin Caelifera are a suborder of the Orthoptera order, commonly known as grasshoppers, chapulines, charates, locusts or sanagustines. They differ from the other suborder of Orthoptera (Ensifera) because the antennae are short and almost always have less than 30 trunks. It is estimated that the separation of the two suborders occurred at the Permian-Triassic boundary.😮😮

DESCRIPTION👨‍🏫👨‍🎓👀🧔

IMG_7045.JPG

They are herbivorous insects, some of which are serious pests for agriculture. The hind legs are typically long and strong, appropriate for jumping. They have two pairs of wings, only the rear ones are membranous and allow them to fly, while the front ones are leathery and are not useful in flight. The females are larger than males.😶😮

Some species make audible noises, usually by rubbing the femurs against the wings or abdomen, or by tapping the wings in flight. If they have organs of hearing, this is on the sides of the first abdominal segment.😶😶

ANTENA👨‍🏫👨‍🎓👀🧔

IMG_20210429_224348.jpg

The antennae are multisegmented appendages present in the anterior metamers of mandibulated arthropods. In crustaceans they are biramean and are present in the first two segments of the head, the smaller pair being called antenules. All other groups of arthropods (with the exception of chelicerates and proturans, which lack them) have a single unirrameal pair of antennae.😋😋

The antennae are articulated to the head and can rotate at their monocondylar articular base. They house a multitude of tactile, olfactory, gustatory and thermo- and hygro-receptive sensibilities, which allow the animal to perceive the presence of objects by touching them, hear, perceive the movement of the air, perceive aromas and flavors, as well as capture the temperature and humidity of the environment and the objects touched by them.🙂🙂

The antennae serve as the primary olfactory organs in insects (in addition to other functions). This is why they are equipped with a wide variety of sensilia. Olfactory receptors can be extremely sensitive and capable of differentiating certain chemicals even at the level of their isomers. In this way, male insects of certain orders such as Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, etc. can perceive and orient themselves towards the sexual pheromones released by females of the same species, facilitating sexual encounters👩‍🦰👨‍🦰

Caellifers take in air through spiracles found on the sides of the abdomen and thorax. These are the entrance to a system of tubes known as the trachea and tracheae, which carry air into the cells of the body and extract carbon dioxide.💨💨

Third pair of legs with the femurs strongly widened at their base and adapted for jumping; the tibiae of this pair of legs have spines that are usually stronger at their ends and are often called dewclaws. In the Ensifera, on the tibiae of the first pair of legs a more or less visible auditory organ may be present; in the Caelifera, this organ is located in the first abdominal segment. In Califera, anatomical modifications may occur that allow the production of sounds during stridulation, these modifications may vary according to the different families.😋😋

quite large and widely attached to the thorax, composed of ten visible tergitos, in the tenth a pair of taxonomically important fences usually appear. The anus is surrounded by three valves: the central one is called the epiproctum and the two lateral paraproctuses. On both sides of the first abdominal segment of Caelifera there is the opening of the auditory organ (tympanic organ), this opening may be more or less covered by an operculum and it is important for the identification of some species; the hearing organ of the Ensifera (when it exists), is located in the anterior tibiae🕵️‍♂️🕵️‍♀️

the males have nine sternites, the last of them in both suborders is called the subgenital plate, which in some Ensifera can carry a couple of styles that are never present in Caelifera. Ensifera females have eight sternites, in some cases the conformation of the sixth and seventh sternites, together with the subgenital plate located at the base of the oviscapt, having great relevance. Female Caelifera have eight sternites, the eighth forming the subgenital plate. Regarding the external genitalia: the shape and size of the oviscapto has great taxonomic value; it is formed by three pairs of valves in Ensifera (one of them hardly visible)
As fêmeas Caelifera têm oito esternitos, o oitavo formando a placa subgênita.

The forewings are elitroids (tegminas), leathery; its Its function is to protect the hind wings which fan out below them and have a complicated venation (with supplementary longitudinal veins and numerous transverse veins). The hind wings are membranous, broad and fan-shaped; in some species they are adorned with bright colors to frighten and disorient potential enemies. The hind wings in many Orthopterans, however, are markedly reduced (brachyptera or microptera) or absent. The jump is the initial act of flight and is put into operation at the last minute.😶😶
