Insects are a fundamental component of agricultural ecosystems. Some are considered pests because of the damage they cause to crops, and they receive the most attention. Many visit flowers and participate in pollination, a very important contribution that we often do not value (without pollination there is no fruit production). Many others are predators or parasitoids, contributing greatly to biological pest control, but generally go unnoticed.🤔🤔

The species to study is a flour beetle, belonging to the order Coleoptera, they are easy to identify and very interesting to see under the microscope, their life cycle is composed of 4 phases, (egg, larva, pupa and imago)! be able to observe the organism in larval and adult state! so we will be able to see the morphological structure of insects! I first freeze the insects so as not to cause damage to the structure! then I observe them with several magnifications and finally I separate the parts of the body to see in detail!🙂🙂

😮MORPHOLOGY/ MORFOLOGIA 🦗🦟

IMG_20210512_095413.jpg

To classify insects into different groups, it is necessary to study their morphology, since each group has structural variations that distinguish them. Even the terminology may vary in different groups. The body of insects is divided into three regions or tagmata: head, thorax and abdomen, each region is formed by the union and specialization of various segments🤔🤔

insects can have simple eyes and compound eyes The simple eyes or ocelli have a simple structure, they are usually located on the dorsal part of the head, in the middle of the compound eyes, sometimes in a frontal position (as in Orthoptera). They are believed to help detect changes in light and intervene during flight. There may be two or three and in some groups they are absent. Compound eyes are pairs and are made up of a set of receptor units called ommatidia. They produce a tiled image and not a repeat of images as is often indicated.🙄😏

all adult insects have antennae with the exception of the order Protura in the Apterygota group. The antennae are made up of three parts: scape, pedicel and flagellum, they vary according to the function they fulfill. The oral apparatus is made up of four basic structures: the labrum, the jaws, the maxillae (carry the maxillary palps) and the lip (carry the labial palps), which are modified and combined to form the various types of oral appliances present in different groups of insects, adapted to different eating habits and functions, such as sucking, chewing and licking😚😚

the legs of the insects are similar to ours since they are composed of femur, tibia and tarsus; They also include two extra pieces that are the coxa and the trochanter. The legs have modifications according to the function they fulfill, some have flattened dorsoventrally forming an oar for swimming and others are shaped like pincers. In lice they are adapted to grasp the hairs of the host; others have adaptations for the male to cling to the female during copulation, and some serve to burrow🙂🙂

insects were the first organisms to develop the flight, therefore their ancestors did not have wings. In such a way that less derived insects such as silverfish (order Thysanura) and collembola (order Collembola) do not have wings, while some such as fleas and lice lost them due to the environment where they develop. Not all adult insects have wings, some have short or vestigial wings (brachiptera) and others do not have wings (wingless).🙂🙂

IMG_20210512_100728.jpg

In different groups of insects we find modifications of the wings that reflect adaptations to the environment in which they develop, for example in beetles or coleopterans the first pair of wings is of a hard consistency and they are not used to fly, but to protect the second pair. which is membranous; in this way they can move through narrow places or even bury themselves without damaging their wings😏😏

Insect wings are not flat, they have a complex network of veins, which give them strength and structure. There are many variations in the venation of insects which indicates the great diversity of flight patterns. Unlike vertebrates (birds and bats) whose wings are modified legs, in insects the wings originate from ancestral structures such as gills found in marine relatives. When an insect changes to an adult state, its wings are very small and / or collected and spread by the pumping of hemolymph through the veins.🙂🙂

IMG_20210512_102612.jpg

The rigid exoskeleton of insects forces them to shed their skin in order to grow. It is called metamorphosis to the series of changes that insects undergo during their development from the egg to becoming adults. With few exceptions, insects hatch from an egg and further development can take one of two paths, incomplete or gradual metamorphosis, or complete metamorphosis. In the most basal groups of insects that do not develop wings (Apterigota), successive molts occur during growth, but there is no obvious transformation, which is why they are considered ametabolos (without transformation).👶🧒👨👴

😮PORTION OF INTESTINE🦗🦟

IMG_20210513_175947.jpg

The digestive system of insects is highly variable between groups and stages of development; in its most basic form it is made up of a long tube and salivary glands. It is divided into two parts, the front part where the mouth opening and the salivary glands are located, and the back part to which the Malpighi tubes responsible for excretion are attached, a function similar to that of our kidneys. During the passage of food through the intestine, all digestive processes are carried out, such as digestion, absorption, formation of feces and elimination of waste. The stomach of insects adapts to food habits and can be structurally different in larvae and adults of the same species.😋😋
