About the museum🙇‍♂️🧠/ Sobre el museo🦋🌍

I have to admit that to date it has been one of my top favorite museums that I have visited! It bears the name "Borboletário de Cascais", it was a small museum created by the Cascais Chamber to encourage research and preservation of Portuguese butterfly species, in addition to being a space that allows you to see the entire life cycle of butterflies! I mean from the egg to the adult! a small museum is divided into three sections where the theoretical part of butterflies is explained, a section that is "a small laboratory" where they reproduce in a controlled way and finally a space that recreates a natural environment for them to complete their life cycle!😁🚩🌏

Fantastic animals🦋🐛/ Animales fantasticos👨‍🏫🌍

Some species are fast (45km/h)🦋

First of all we must know that butterflies are scientifically known as (Lepidoptera), surely you have already read the word somewhere but do you know what it means? they were baptized this way because they have thousands of scales on their wings!💙

These beautiful and colorful animals belong to the insects and within the insects we group them in the "lepidoptera", then they have been classified in "ropalocera and heterocera" this to differentiate the diurnal and nocturnal butterflies, the scientists maintain that "the suborder Glossata "It is the one with the largest number of species, do you know which is the branch that studies butterflies? "They are the entomologists" and within the entomologists we have "Lepidopterology".👨‍💻🍁🦋

To date, scientists have recorded more than 170,000 butterflies worldwide, in Europe there are approximately 8,500 species, and Portugal alone contains 2,500 species of Lepidoptera! Lepidoptera are the second largest order of insects with the most species! there are those who say that more than 400,000 species of Lepidoptera remain to be discovered on the planet! ALL A MYSTERY TO SOLVE!(2)🤩👨‍🏫😮

Lepidoptera have great vision🦋

Wow, insects are animals with an amazing evolutionary and adaptive event! it is estimated that more than 90% of the animals that live on land can be an "insect" one of their evolutionary advantages is that they managed to colonize any type of environment, we see insects in water, land, air. The "craziest" thing about insects is that they even managed to adapt to live with us in our homes!! xd(2)🦟🦗🐝🐛

Entomologists affirm that approximately 170,000 species of lepidoptera are "diurnal" in habit and this tells us that the rest would be nocturnal butterflies! even the "arctic tundra" it is possible that a butterfly could survive therefore they are insects very resistant to various types of climates!(2)🤩😏

A very sweet relationship🦋🐛/ Una relacion muy dulce👨‍🏫🌍

What is the food of butterflies? easy... The nectar of flowers, NOT all butterflies need nectar to use it as an energy source, but a large number of species require this "natural sweet", and of course the flower is also interested in the butterfly feed on nectar because these insects are pollinators and that mutual relationship helps the flower to thrive! For every tree I saw in the museum there was a plaque of a butterfly that explained that this tree was essential to complete the butterfly's life cycle, from feeding to laying eggs.(2)👨‍🏫🤩🦋

Surely you wonder how they feed on nectar? butterflies actually have a "snout" that can be retracted! they use it to introduce it into the organelles of plants and thus extract the nectar, some biologists think that the relationship between the size of the butterfly's trunk has to do with the design of the flower! I mean there is a specific type of butterfly for each type of flower! beautiful evolutionary relationship right?(1)🌺💖🦋

How did they evolve?🦋🐛/ Como evolucionaron👨‍🏫🌍

They have many years in the world🦋

The oldest fossil of a butterfly discovered dates back to about 140 million years, some entomologists believe that the minimum on earth for a diurnal butterfly is 40 million years! They are very old insects! they appeared when plants began to form flowers as a means of reproduction(1)🦟🦗🐝🐛

Day and night?🦋🐛/ Diurnas y nocturnas?👨‍🏫🌍

Diurnal butterflies are very colorful and have large antennae, in reality they are much more complex than nocturnal ones, few know but in the position in which a butterfly perches you can determine if it is diurnal or nocturnal! the daytime ones perch by opening their wings and closing them vertically! in moths this does not happen🌑🌕(1)

I would like to point out that moths have antennae "with feathery accessories" which is not the case during the day!😮

The interesting thing about the museum is that you can see the entire metamorphosis of a butterfly! starting in the eggs that are fertilized with the male, then the larva is born that feeds on the leaves of the plant and then passes to a chrysalis and finally the adult butterfly! let's remember the video the butterflies when they reach the chrysalis they already have their adult size!🌼😮🧠

Sadly, butterflies have nothing to defend themselves against predators, so they have evolved to camouflage themselves in the environment where they live!🐛🦋

Finally, I would like to raise awareness since climate change is affecting the population of butterflies around the world, something that our guide explained to us was that due to the heat the flowers come early and open in months when they should not, the same happens with butterflies eventually reach adulthood when there are no flowers available and they live for less time!🤔⛔⭕
