Hello Hello! it's me again bringing quality post to learn science and nurture our neurons! on this day I took a walk in a mangrove, while walking many questions arose in my head! how do they work? what is a mangrove? what lives in them? and well!!! I thought why not make a post? come with me to learn a little about mangroves!🤩🤔

WHAT IS A MANGROVE👨‍🎓👨‍🏫🌿🌾

Let's start with defining what a mangrove is, clearly we are talking about a common ecosystem of coastal areas with unique vegetation, they are common in tropical and subtropical regions, they are known to have great biodiversity! so in 1960 they were declared as permanent preservation zones!🤗🤩

There are several types of mangroves in the world but they all meet the same rule for a vegetation to be classified as a mangrove must grow in two types of marine-terrestrial environments, so it is common when we visit a mangrove to get a swampy and rainy environment! A mangrove can also grow between a sea and a river!😃😍

The main function of a mangrove goes beyond processing atmospheric CO2, we are talking about serving as an environment for a great diversity of animal species, mangroves have a unique property (they help to avoid wear and tear and erosion of soils) avoiding the sediment accumulation on the beach✈🛫🛬🚦

Mangroves are great producers of organic matter such as leaves, their aerial roots are capable of filtering toxins or harmful compounds that will end up in the sea! As I mentioned before, the water that goes to the river towards the mainland goes through a desalination process that the roots and leaves of the mangrove swamp can achieve!👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

The mangrove tree is the arboreal species that most predominates in the mangroves, its roots grow aerial and terrestrial within the mud! Within the mangroves, animals must acquire a unique adaptation for the changes of tides, which is why there are many endemic species that do not exist in other ecosystems! ONLY IN MANGROVES!😊😊

UNICAMENTE EN MANGLARES!🐡🐠🐟🦞🦜

Within the flora of the mangroves, mangrove trees stand out mainly, although other species flourish around them. There are around 70 species of mangrove trees, these four being the most common: White mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), jeli or gray mangrove (Conocarpus erectus), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) and red mangrove (Rhizhophora mangle).🙂🤗

TYPES OF MANGROVES👨‍🎓👨‍🏫🌿🌾

image.png

image.png

Mangroves are classified depending on the type of area where they grow, for example Ribereño: They grow on the banks of rivers and in areas where there is a certain influence of the tides and salt water.💦💙

image.png

Edge: They grow on the shores of the coasts, in reef bays or lagoons or around islands. These types of mangroves are those that withstand the continuous blow of the waves in front.😊😍

image.png

Specials: The mangroves that are of little development form the so-called special mangroves. They are so named because they grow in conditions of high salinity, low nutrient availability, and extreme temperatures.😶😶

The mangrove (in Guaraní 'twisted tree') is the predominant tree species in the mangroves. These are trees that live along the entire coastline, rivers and estuaries and keep part of their trunks under salty water. They are very resistant trees that thrive in muddy, sandy, peaty soils, in very brackish conditions (with water up to 100 times more salty) and hot, which would kill most plant species. Part of this resistance is due to the fact that these trees have a large number of adaptations, such as a filtration system that keeps a large amount of salt out, a root system that manages to keep the mangrove upright despite the changing sediments on which they settle and systems that help their roots to seek existing oxygen on the surface (the amount of oxygen in the ecosystem is limited).😁😁

The fruits of these trees are known as propagules and are spear-shaped. This shape is important, since it allows them to bury themselves in the substrate when they fall on it or to float long times and distances until they find land on which to settle.🕵️‍♂️🕵️‍♀️👩‍🎓

MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS👨‍🎓👨‍🏫🌿

The mangroves are known as "blue forests". This is because they are incredibly efficient at storing carbon. This makes them a natural solution in the fight against climate change since they are capable of absorbing up to 10 times more greenhouse gases than other tropical forests or terrestrial ecosystems.🕵️‍♀️👮‍♂️👮‍♀️

Deforestation, industrial activity and the discharge of waste in these areas are putting the existence of these valuable ecosystems in danger. According to data from the United Nations, more than a third of the world's mangroves have disappeared in the last 100 years. For this reason, protecting mangroves has become one of the most important environmental challenges in recent years.💥💥

As we saw, mangroves are very important ecosystems on the planet, but also one of the most threatened in the world. The main environmental problems that affect mangroves are:

  • Pollution
  • The occupation of their territory
  • Mass tourism
  • Global warming
  • The overexploitation of its natural resources
It is for this reason that it was necessary to propose laws that especially protect these ecosystems. Thus, law n ° 4,771 approved on September 15, 1965 places mangroves as a permanent preservation area (APP) and on July 26 the International Day for the Defense of Mangroves is celebrated.
