Health Museum👩‍🔬👩‍⚕️🧠 / Museo de la salud🥽🧤

Hello science addicts! Today I visit the Portuguese Health Museum for the first time, here we can see how health has evolved throughout history, in Portugal it has already been 800 years since public health began to be understood, since for many centuries it was believed that disease was synonymous with "punishment" that is, originally we were ignorant of the cause and it was attributed to a "supernatural mystical" plane and well, we didn't waste time looking for some kind of symptom either!😅🤔👩‍🔬

Sobre el museo🕵️‍♂️📚👩‍⚕️/about the museum🙇‍♂️🏛

The Portuguese Health Museum shows a chronological approach to the evolution of health in the country and the whole world! When we walk inside the museum we will go through six stages from the medieval era to our modern era, also through a set of instruments we can see how pharmacology and medicine have evolved, we will also see some endemic diseases that plagued the country in the 19th century. XX😮🌏📚

Health history🕵️‍♂️📚👩‍⚕️/Historia de la salud🙇‍♂️🏛

20th century anatomical model🧠🌍

I have always liked studying the Egyptian civilization because for me they were the most advanced of the time and to this day they have left us a legacy! and with them is that "a conceptual change" about medicine appears, really what the Egyptians did is show society that good hygiene and cleanliness can bring health to our body.🧠🌍

Because they know the Hebrew culture because it is closely related to "religion" but the Hebrews were the first civilization on the planet to stipulate health laws and ordinances for their people, that is, the instructions that had been issued by their God ordered them to avoid certain foods to to avoid getting sick, as well as to avoid sexually transmitted diseases, when the jews went to war "God" had ordered them to shovel their excrement to avoid getting sick.📚🌏😮

In order to understand the "modern concept of health as we know it today, then we would have to travel back in time to ancient Greece, this civilization managed to "perform a channel between health and mythology", let's say it is a combination between their goddess of health "Hygea" and of course the father of medicine "Hippocrates", later we know that the Romans were also a very advanced civilization and that they adopted the Greek culture among their customs, perfecting "public" health.💖🤔🤔

The first operation was performed by a Roman🧠🌍

But the Romans would also leave their contribution to future societies on public health, and it is that they would be the first to build a drainage system to separate clean water from those not suitable for consumption, they were also known for being one of the civilizations cleaner of many! Later I believe that medicine was not a priority in civilizations and instead wars and conquests were the priority issue in the Middle Ages! Let's say that medicine here did not advance because only remedies made with herbs and other substances were used! and instead the Romans had already established for the first time a person specialized in medicine: "Medicus Romanus" who also had specializations, that is, a doctor capable of performing operations!🧠🌍

We must travel a few years later until we reach the "Renaissance" age, here medicine grows again in such a way that deep studies of the human body are even carried out, there are those who attribute this impulse to the "Lutheran reform" and it makes sense since it was They remove many powers from the Catholic Church, who was the one who dictated many laws in ancient society! The Catholic Church was forbidden to touch "a corpse for scientific purposes" and this was a vital point in medicine when an autopsy was first performed in the 18th century.👨‍🏫🤔🧔

This microscope built with glass and metal was very precise and still remains as a collector's item in the Lisbon Health Museum, it was built in 1892 and was very advanced for the time, capable of magnifying about 80x.🤔👨‍🏫

Continuing with the history of medicine, there was a very important mix between the Renaissance and the Reformation, making medicine one of the most studied trades of the time! There are those who blame the inquisition for many of the diseases that plagued Europe due to the lack of discipline and centralization of health in society! When we got to the 20th century, there was a character who revolutionized the treatment of infectious diseases: A Fleming, who would create penicillin and with it the treatment of many incurable diseases!👨‍🏫🧠📖
