Semiotic and semiology are two terms that have been used in one way or another in divergent ways over the years. Either because of the significant opposition of their terms or because of the semantic plurality that such words show each one separately.

Since its origins expressed in the Anglo-American tradition by Locke and Peirce on the one hand and its European origin in Saussure on the other, there are still authorized voices that insist on granting both terms synonymic or different values according to the case.

The term semiology was conceived by Ferdinand de Saussure in his book General Linguistics Course (1945), understood as “the science that studies the life of signs within social life”:
"Thus, a science can be conceived that studies the life of signs within the social vision. Such a science would be part of social psychology, and therefore of general psychology. We would call it semiology (from the Greek semephon ‘sign’)" (p.60).

A science that, despite not yet existing, according to Saussure, would determine the laws that semiology discovers and that would be applicable to linguistics, so the latter would be subject to semiology, within the set of human facts :

"She will teach us what the signs consist of and what are the laws that govern them. Since it does not exist yet, it cannot be said what it would be; but it has a right to existence, and its place is determined in advance. Linguistics is only one part of this general science. (Saussure, ibid, p. 60).

Almost at the same time as Saussure, the North American Charles S. Peirce establishes a doctrine or formal theory of signs based on logic, to which he gives the name of semiotics, which studies the characters of the signs and from there, by a process of abstraction is reached by induction of judgments regarding what the characters of the signs used should be. It should be noted that these studies, under the name of general semantics, had been carried out since the beginning of the 20th century.

If for Saussure the social function of the sign stands out, for Peirce it will be its logical function. But both aspects are strongly related, so for Giraud (s / f), both terms semiology and semiotics designate the same discipline, the first used by Europeans and the second by Anglo-Saxons (Giraud, p. 8).

Distintos enfoques

Different approaches

Under conditions such as those set forth, it is shown that there are no simultaneities or encounters between the domains attributed for semiology. Semiology or semiotics studies all sign systems, whether they are linguistic or not. It was Saussure who argued that linguistics is subordinate to semiology.

Roland Barthes (1915-1980), in the 1960s, refuted what was asserted by Saussure, arguing the opposite position, this is the subordination of semiology to linguistics, since the latter, although it studies non-linguistic elements, will always assume of language to investigate them.

Since 1966 Cristian Metz, studying Saussure's denomination, insisted that the science that deals with signs and semiotics should continue to be called semiology the science that studies the particular languages on which the general semiological theory is based, so that we would have a semiotics of literature, music, architecture, art, etc.

In Prolegomena to a theory of language, Louis Hjemlslev, a Danish linguist, in 1977 defined semiology as a "metasemiotic", that is to say semiology is a study of signs encoded in social action, while semiotics deals with particular investigations on the one on which the general theory is based.

Algirdas Julien Greimas in 1974 proposes, based on Hjemlslev, the terminology of semiotics for each of the disciplines that study expression and semiology, which focuses on content, further subdividing semiotics into qualitative ones for the human and discriminative sciences. for the natural ones.

Ferruccio Rossi-Landi (1974) makes the difference between semiotics as a general science of signs and semiology as a science of signs already coded post and translinguistic.

Umberto Eco (1932-2016), in 1976 raised the dilemma in terms that semiotics is a "philosophy of meaning", adding that the totality of human knowledge is grouped into three fields: ethics, physics and semiotics. With this, Eco places semiology above all other disciplines that deal with language (Raffino, 2020).

From the constitutive charter of the International Association for Semiotic Studies in 1969, it had been decided to unify such names with the term semiotics, which in principle should solve the problem, but, despite this, there is still no generalized determination on this. point.
