Who else is waiting for TV News to hear the weather forecast? It’s so outdated, so 20th Centurish…

So far, you have been able to find precise meteorological data for about three days in advance on the network with some effort. However, it was not easy to find a place where you could get a good visual representation of the movement of air masses that would free you of independent interpretation of numerical data. Well, that’s where the Ventusky web application is second to none. It was developed in collaboration with Marek Mojzik and Martin Prantl for the Czech meteorological company InMeteo based in Pilsen.

This application uses the same data sources as many other online sites, but it’s visually so much better done that you’ll probably forget about the competition as soon as you visit this location for the first time. The main provider of meteorological data for Ventusky is DWD (Deutscher Wetterdiens) and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). However, the radar layers have several other country-specific sources. All used sources are sumarized on the page Data sources.”

As can be seen at the very beginning, the meteorological elements are color-coded with constant wind animation. For example, the first picture shows a cloud cover – white is a complete cloud, and blue is a clear sky. There are shades between them, and white lines indicate the direction of the wind in a certain territory.

On the left you select the meteorological elements that interest you. There are the following elements: Temperature two meters above the ground, subjective temperature, precipitation, radar display, satellite display, cloudiness, wind speed, wind gusts, air pressure (the most important element of weather forecasting), thunderstorms, humidity, waves, snow cover, and lately all the more important – air pollution. In addition, you can choose from several automatic display models that differ in time and space resolution.

In the picture below you can see yesterday’s situation when Greece was hit by a storm called Ianis…

…and today you already can see how much Ianis has weakened and moved south. At the bottom of the window you have a timeline where you can go ‘into the future’ to see what the weather will be like. However, do not overdo it – the weather forecast is reliable only up to three days in advance, since the movement of air masses is, to be sure, still unpredictable. Climate impacts are numerous and changes too quick to be able to count on an accurate long-term forecast.

What is missing?

The application has been translated into more than 40 languages, including Serbian (Settings button, upper right corner) so it will be easier for you to navigate. It is not easy to find a flaw in such an application. If there is a possibility to further improve it, then it could be the simultaneous display of data pairs, for example simultaneous visualization of clouds and precipitation, or clouds and air pressure, or air pressure and precipitation… It would be best to simply allow the selected data include additional as overlap at the option of the user.

In any case, this application is a formidable example of how science and technology can fit into a clear and very useful application that can become your reliable pocket meteorologist, freeing you of the attachment to the TV screen…

Hey, windy.com is the same!

Thanks, @valerianis, it is quite similar indeed. Windy.com has even more data, but the looks are not so clean and nice. Also, I don’t like their policy of ‘sign in if you want everything’…
