“Movies” In Black Holes

Black Holes bend spacetime and our theories about physics to the very edge. But maybe we could use their special properties to learn more about the Universe.

It may sound strange but block holes just are extremely strange. Physicists are saying that maybe we could be capable of reading the photons that orbit wildly around the gravitational singularity of a black hole. And this would teach us about the history of the Universe.

When the virtual telescope Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) got the first detailed picture of a black hole last year it seemed to have increased the interest in researching these incredible objects. Scientists are trying hard to understand them but because we are talking about black holes – it is very hard.

One of the newest news says that the misty glow that surrounds black holes could hide something interesting. It’s the thing that looks orange on the nowadays legendary image of the supermassive black hole Pōwehi which can be found in the center of the Messier 87 galaxy. And what it is? Photons. Photons that were temporarily caught by the gravity of the black hole and are now orbiting it creating complex rings of radiation created from smaller but even more complex subrings. Scientists think these may work somewhat similar to tree rings or maybe even as images from an incredible movie that records the history of the Universe.

The scientists that study Pōwehi think these photon rings could be read. And maybe we could find out how the black hole was created from the readings. This is utterly fascinating because so far, we have very little knowledge about how black holes actually get created. But the photons could allow us to deduce the characteristic of this supermassive black hole and maybe even work as the grand experiment for testing our core theories about physics such as Einstein’s General Relativity. The physicists say that the photons are similar to a movie that captures the history of the surrounding Universe.

The experts are convinced that researching the radiation that surrounds black holes could uncover many of the mysteries behind black holes. Nonetheless, the value of this “historical source” is limited. The physicists say that each of the rings around the black hole is just six days older than the previous one. And eventually, each of these rings will get to the event horizon vanish from the Universe.
