Los Angeles To Tokyo In 3 Hours
While almost nobody is flying currently after the pandemic ends people will want to travel again. And maybe we could see the return of supersonic airplanes into the commercial sector as Aerion promises a plane for 50 people that make it from Los Angeles to Tokyo in less than 3 hours.

The Aerion Corporation is an American planemaker from Reno in Nevada established by the Texan billionaire and philanthropist Richard Bass. The company has been developing supersonic airliners since 2004 that would not have the problems current supersonic planes have. They are mostly aiming for quiet flight, lower fuel consumption, and lower emissions produced.
For the year 2027, they planning to have a luxurious supersonic bizjet Aerion AS2. This plane should fly 8 to 12 passengers with a speed of up to 1.6 Mach up to a distance of 7,400 kilometers. As you might have guessed, this isn’t a plane for just anyone. But it seems that Aerion is also thinking about regular mortals.
In March of 2021, Aerion introduced a new type of airliner to the world called AS3. This airliner should be capable of carrying up to 50 passengers at a distance of 7,000 kilometers. But that’s the boring part. The interesting part comes with its speed that should go over Mach 4 bringing truly unseen speeds to commercial flying.
The Aerion Corporation said that they would like to get the AS3 into the air by the end of this decade. But we can be quite sure that will not be easy. Without even taking into consideration the inevitable but quite solvable technological problems, their efforts will be complicated by strict regulations that currently forbid supersonic planes to fly ever land and we don’t know when or even if this will change.
And that’s not all. We aren’t even sure what kind of effect will the pandemic have on aerial travel. On the other hand, people may want to truly enjoy it after being forced not to by COVID. It’s truly hard to even guess whether we will see even similar numbers of airliners in the air as we used to.
Yet, the people at Aerion remain optimistic. They have good financing as Boeing itself recently became their strategic partner. And the pre-orders for AS2 seem to be going well. We will know more in a few years.
