COVID-19 Parties? Fake News!

In media you might have heard about so-called COVID parties. Their goal supposedly was to get the party-goers infected with the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. And the person who gets first diagnosed with COVID-19 first? Wins!

Even politicians and noteworthy health organizations advised to avoid such parties. But the key to good journalism is verification. Making sure you get at the very least two independent sources for your information. And it seems that many media around the world did not do that.

So let’s take a look at this. For example, we had information that the record numbers in Alabama are caused by students from Tuscaloosa. Allegedly, they were supposed to have a COVID party. They were supposed to have someone who they knew was already infected. They supposedly gathered money into a bank and the person who got infected first took all the money.

But this was just bullshit. Not only is it unlikely you could find that many idiotic people but there also was a complete lack of relevant and trustworthy sources for this information. It actually seems that a Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry was the first to circulate this fake news.

Fake Fairy-tale News

When McKinstry was asked where she got this information she did not answer. The Ministry of Health in Alabama said that it was impossible to make sure whether such an event took place. So, it’s clear – such fake news was created when a bad journalist quoted some local politician. Then larger media cited the local news and eventually even international media outlets published this fake news.
