En términos de oficina o términos corporativos escuchamos la palabra Workstation y nos preguntamos ¿Que es un workstation?.

Esto es lo que se denomina estación de trabajo y está conformado por un equipo informático que se utiliza para múltiples tareas de manera simultánea, y tiene la capacidad de ejecutar varios programas muy útiles para el tipo de trabajo en el que se utilizan, pueden ser áreas como ingeniería, arquitectura, etc.

Generalmente las estaciones de trabajo vienen equipadas y adaptadas de manera específica para el puesto de trabajo. La potencia y poder de procesamientos de datos, que se determina por el microprocesador y la memoria que contiene así como el almacenamiento de datos que está dado por la capacidad y características del disco de almacenamiento.

Son equipos generalmente destinados para alta productividad y gestionan grandes cantidades de datos, por ello son equipos potentes en cuanto al procesamiento de cálculos, ligado a esto, los costos de estos equipos suelen ser mucho mas elevados y generalmente son equipos que necesitan mayor espacio físico.

Para comprender un poco mejor veremos las características principales de una estación de trabajo.

Generalmente la configuración del hardware no es del tipo convencional ya que se utilizan generalmente para realizar tareas técnicas, sus procesadores son mas poderosos que los convencionales, al nivel de servidor y su memoria es de mayor capacidad.

Generalmente estos equipos ofrecen cierta escalabilidad permitiendo la posibilidad de actualización tanto de software como de hardware.
