Quantum Supremacy

avatar

Hello dear readers!

The world of technology and the advances of science seem unstoppable, every time we find something new that surprises us, when we think we have heard and seen everything, a new discovery, a new invention, new applications etc.

Source

Last month Google published an article in the journal Nature, where they claim to have achieved quantum supremacy, this fact caused a stir in the entire world scientific community, for having reached such an important milestone and difficult to achieve, it is something truly extraordinary .

What is quantum supremacy

Quantum supremacy is the potential capacity of quantum computing devices to solve problems that classical computers can hardly solve. The quantum advantage is the potential to solve problems more quickly.

Wikipedia

How they achieved quantum supremacy

Google claimed to have achieved quantum supremacy, when its Sycamor processor was able to solve a problem in 200 seconds, a task that would take the best super computer known so far 10,000 years, as they said through this publication.

"Under these conditions, Google physicists manufactured a processor consisting of 54 cubits. As one did not work properly, the device stayed at 53. To test the system, they designed a random number sampling task. The calculation has no practical use. The intention was to show that Sycamore could work wonders. And, apparently, he did them. "

Reactions.

By the time Google decided to make its official announcement, the article was filtered on the NASA website and the different reactions and opinions regarding these statements were not long in coming.

Google's quantum computer had apparently achieved the milestone of quantum supremacy, although others openly disagree with the fact.

IBM strong competitor of Google in the race for quantum supremacy, I question the statements of the technological giant's statement.

"We argue that an ideal simulation of the same task can be performed in a classic system in 2.5 days and with much greater fidelity," said the

According to Edwin Pednault, John Gunnels and Jay Gambetta IBM researchers .

"This is, in fact, a conservative estimate for the worst case scenario, and we hope that with additional improvements the classic cost of simulation can be further reduced."

My point.

To be honest, before knowing this news I had no idea what this meant, it is because of the stir that caused the news that I am interested in knowing what it is.

My main point in this whole issue is, if Google's statement is true, How does quantum supremacy benefit us? What can you do for us in our day to day? Would common citizens have access to this technology?...

The truth is that quantum computing or quantum supremacy is something new for me, I confess ignorant of all these technological advances, not knowing what they will do for us in the future, so I would like to know the opinion of experts on this topic, to clear Some of my doubts, if you are not an expert I would also like to know what you think about this.

Far from an expert on this subject (or really any other subject … 😉 ) @fucho80, I have been reading about the pending release of computers with this capability for the last 2 years or so, since R & D (research and development) on them has been very active for quite some time. As you cite here, there are many others, besides Google, who are in this “race” and we’ll likely all find out soon enough who the “winner” is going to be.

To what end? Only our sovereign Lord ultimately knows, but man views this as a huge technological step forward given the exponential increase in processing power these quantum computers represent. Perhaps you and I could agree that, as with most any technological advance, there will be some positive applications of it. And some that will be very sobering, in terms of what they will represent for our future …

I hope all is well for you and yours. God bless you!

Hello dear @roleerob, thanks for such a quick response.

I totally agree with you, but the speed that technology advances every year surprises me, I know that many will become a blessing for humanity.

I only hope that this technological "career" companies can try to improve the quality of life of people.

I hope all is well for you and yours. God bless you!

Amen! Thank you friend, I wish many blessings to you, may God continue to illuminate your steps.

Can I know where are you from?

Certainly @fucho80 ...

"Can I know where are you from?"

… we live in the Rocky Mountains part of America. I personally prefer to maintain my privacy here on our Steem blockchain, so I have never gotten more specific than that.

As a brother in Christ, though, I am not uncomfortable “talking” to you more privately, if that is of interest to you. I am @roleerob#3299 on Discord …

Friend @fucho80 in technology everything is possible. I tell you

In 2002 I was doing a course of Cisco networks at that time a classmate of that course was doing his thesis of electrical, the same was based on a mathematical algorithm that managed to create so that the capacity of 10 Cd that in At that time a CD had a storage capacity of 700 MB that algorithm that developed had the property that those 10 CDs could be stored on a floppy disk of just 1.44 MB
So I do not doubt that quantum supremacies is already working for a while now.

Note. my friend did not finish the course because a technology company recruited him.

Hi brother @lanzjoseg, thanks for your comment.

It is true, I think that nothing can surprise us, there are so many advances and so fast that sometimes one wonders where we are going to get.

Days ago I saw a report about a Japanese company that was creating artificial skin with all the properties of the natural, even with cells that can reproduce, hahaha crazy brother.

Regards appreciated friend @fucho80.

I had heard this news a couple of months ago.

It really catches my attention the real reason why Google made this announcement. This obviously obeys a commercial strategy.

The arms sectors of the great world powers must have already offered billions to obtain this technology.

The knowledge that I can contribute in this matter is practically null.

Thanks for sharing.

Your friend, Juan.

Hello dear @juanmolina, thanks for being here friend.

Of course, I imagine that this must have some utility, I read something about the fields in which these quantum computers can be used and it is not precisely for office or personal use.

Thank you for your comment Juan, I appreciate it very much!

Dear @fucho80

Again, interesting read. I've been trying to understand idea behind Quantum computing and I found it to be a very difficult challenge. It surely does feel like technology is reaching another breaking point, after which they may be no "return" to where we were before.

Quantum supremacy is the potential capacity of quantum computing devices to solve problems that classical computers can hardly solve. The quantum advantage is the potential to solve problems more quickly.

Ehm. Yeah. That's very simplified explanation. I've watched recently some youtube video where someone tried to explain how does it all work and it does sounded more like:
"thanks to Quantum computing we can "steal" resources from different dimensions, dimensions we do not understand. And we use those resources in our world to speed up computing process".

At the end of the day, it does look like we're playing around with something as huge (or even more powerful) than nuclear energy, without really understanding nature of world behind Quantum physics. Very scary thing.

Another thing is that problems solved by QC would be most likely of very different nature than problems solved with current computing power and current maths.

Google claimed to have achieved quantum supremacy, when its Sycamor processor was able to solve a problem in 200 seconds, a task that would take the best super computer known so far 10,000 years

shocking. I wonder how much did this operation cost. Millions most likely.

How does quantum supremacy benefit us? What can you do for us in our day to day? Would common citizens have access to this technology?

I don't think common citizens will ever have an access to this technology. Mostly because of costs behind running QC. Only the wealthiest and most advanced corporations could afford to use it for any purposes.

Upvote on the way :)
Cheers, Piotr

Hi leader @crypto.piotr thanks for being here.

Correct, when I heard these terms and read about this subject, I thought of nuclear energy, something that has the potential to be used for dual purposes, for peaceful or military purposes. In addition to the millionaire investment that this represents would only be available to large corporations as you mentioned later.

Thanks friend!

Very nice article! Yes, I've read about this news and the way it made it's way into the public which initially triggert my "conspiracy radar" hahaha!

Nah, kiddind aside, this is impressive to say the least that this was achievable even with one of the Qbits being "out of order" in this test setup.

When we will see some real life use of this is still open imho.

I'm always have an eye on quantum computing because of the possible implications to encryption tech or to put it bluntly possible hash cracking successes powered by quantum computing.

Being an crypto enthusiast this especially would make for a bunch of really bad days if something in this regard would happen.

...and again a few months back an IBM statement on this possibility in short "blowing crypto into oblivion by quantum computing due to cracking encryption"... send shivers down my spine and didn't make me like IBM more tbqh! Hahaha!

We're still far away from such possibilities but my feeling is crypto encryption must be quantum hardened soonish!

Cheers!

A certain friend for me is a reasonable fear. Can you imagine if this happens? hahaha, suddenly the cryptography in which we were all sure loses all its charm and security?

Anyway, just like you, I think that is still unlikely.

Thanks friend!

Yep @fucho80!

Scary right? I already imagined that... for sure no fun that thought! Hahaha!

But... besides this breaking encryption horror scenario there are other risks involved when it comes to crypto and especially Bitcoin.

Bad actors could easily try to make Bitcoin obsolete by 51%ing the Bitcoin network.

It's always stated that it would be economically unfeasible to go for an 51% scenario but this argument may is flawed when it comes to nation states and bigger economic and political goals. What if an attacker doesn't care about Bitcoin "profit"?

"The Hated One" recently made and nice video on this that I recommend watching for all crypto enthusiasts:

Cheers!

Kinda figure that by the time true quantum supremacy is realized that global violence will be either stabilized or solely a police action. The other option is warring companies.
