2020 Continues Right On Trend

If it were any other year I would have been surprised to get this text message last night but since it’s 2020, I wasn’t.

Yes, another curfew was issued for St. Paul Thursday evening after a alleged homicide suspect committed suicide in downtown Minneapolis. Some witnesses at the scene misinterpreted the incident as a police shooting. As word spread quickly on social media the protesting shortly followed. Several stores in the vicinity were looted in the hours after the shooting. This incident happened one day after teenage gunman Kyle Wittenhouse killed two victims at a protest just a few hundred miles away in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Just when it felt as though the world was coming completely unhinged I ran across the quote above. It was like a case of divine timing. It was one of the instances when something as simple as that quote at the right time helped to put things in proper perspective.

Yes, certain aspects of America and the world at large are inextricably broken at this moment in time. I feel disillusioned with both the Democratic and the Republican parties in my own country at the moment and know I'm not the only one. Hopefully we can find a way to pick up these broken pieces, save what is salvageable, and turn them into something even better and more beautiful. One thing is for sure, we need to do a hell of a lot better than we're doing now. We owe it to all of those future generations that will come after us.

“Often, we try to repair broken things in such a way as to conceal the repair and make it “good as new.” But the tea masters understood that by repairing the broken bowl with the distinct beauty of radiant gold, they could create an alternative to “good as new” and instead employ a “better than new” aesthetic. They understood that a conspicuous, artful repair actually adds value. Because after mending, the bowl's unique fault lines were transformed into little rivers of gold that post repair were even more special because the bowl could then resemble nothing but itself." - Teresita Fernandez

I’ve Picked My Apple

I mentioned in last week’s Musings that my beloved iPhone 8 that has traveled with me all over the world was toasted. After a few days' research I decided on the $549 iPhone SE 2020 with 256GB of memory. After the trade-in allowance on my old 8 the SE 2020 cost me $379, the iPhone 11 would have been more in the neighborhood of $800 after rebate. Although $379 is still no small sum it's not bad for a phone with Apple’s newest A13 chipset. I hope to get at least four years out of this before it's time to trade it in.

Transferring from the old phone to the new one was a nightmare due to the fact the out memory was maxed out on my old phone. Plus, I was on the line with Verizon's customer service for over an hour trying to get the new phone activated but now it's done and I'm very happy with my choice.

This phone is blazingly fast and takes incredible pictures (the photo of the cathedral above was one of the first ones I shot). The SE has the same lens as the old iPhone 8 but Apple has worked some real magic with the image processing because the photos are noticeably better. It also shoots video in 4k so I’ll be using it to start my vlog as well.

Mindful Moments: Perfecting The Pause - Book Update

Beta Reading
The beta-reading is still going along wonderfully. Thanks so much to all those who’ve read chapters one through six and offered suggestions! Unfortunately, I didn’t meet my goal of getting all ten chapters posted for beta-readers but I’ll keep trudging forward. Thankfully, I’m still well ahead of schedule.

One reason for the delay this week is I was commissioned to do a personalized poem a few days ago and took my attention away from the manuscript. I don’t really advertise this bespoke poetry service much anymore but I love doing it and have had some of the most interesting clients through the years. I’ve offered the service on the web since 1998 so I show up on the first page of Google’s search results when anyone searches for personalized poetry. Because of this I still get four or five of these personalized poetry commissions per year and rarely turn them down because I enjoy the work so much.

Illustrations
I should be getting a few sample illustrations from the artist, Ophelia Fu, next week. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning waiting for those first samples.

Next Steps
Next week I’ll post chapters seven through ten and continue to incorporate beta-reader suggestions into the final manuscript, brainstorming on the final book cover.

I still need someone (preferably someone well-known in the self-help, mindfulness realm) to write a cover quote for the book. If you know a good candidate for that quote I would appreciate any referrals!

Guzbuck™

Guzbuck is a word coined by my friend and following blogger, @sultnpapper. He's started selling merch associated with his blog and my Guzbuck mug finally arrived!

This mug will get a lot of guzbucking use. I drink three cups of green tea and two cups of coffee per day, this keeps the fingers floating across these keys. I urge you all to visit his shop on Zazzle and check out what he has to offer. After all, everyone needs a little guzbuck in their lives, especially in 2020.

That’s all for now. I hope you all enjoy your weekends!

With Gratitude,

Eric Vance Walton

Lovely Eric, lovely. I still find time to always appreciate the aesthetics of your blog post before even taking the time to actually read. In all honesty I feel the iPhone SE is a beast and you'd definitely enjoy it. The A13 chipset is something out of heaven and well I'll say it's definitely expensive but then not when I look at that dazzling image. I hope to seeing more of it.
Well I could write a cover quote for you, I don't know if I'm qualified but then I feel I should be able to.
Can't wait to eventually see the outcome of the whole book.
Cheers and vlogs in 4k would be awesome

Thank you! Except for this A13 chip this phone is basically an iPhone 8, case and everything for half the price they charged for the 8 three years ago. I can't believe how far that tiny chip expanded the capabilities. That's very kind of you to offer to do the cover quote. I may take you up on that when the book is done. Cheers, my friend. Enjoy your weekend!

The world in general is a broken place. The increased mortality rate this year alone is alarming!
I love your iPhone SE 2020 already. The picture it takes is dope.
Goodluck with your book Eric!

We're in such difficult and dangerous phase in our history right now. The alarmists are even talking about a widespread collapse of our entire civilization over the course of the next 250 years. If we can't find a way to get past all of the challenges we're facing they might, in fact, be true. We need to take better care of this planet, the other inhabitants on it, and each other.

Thank you @avose! I was afraid I'd have buyers remorse for not going with the most powerful phone out there because I use it for work, for travel, for everything but this one should be future-proof for at least another 3-4 years.

I don't know that you could have found a more perfect quote to fit your post and what is happening in the world right now. I do believe that a lot of things happening are indeed by design by certain individuals but that is just my opinion. Light and dark can be interpreted different ways and I see it as good and evil..the evil right now is palpable.
I don't have an iphone but my son does and they do take some awesome photographs..the Catherdral shot looks amazing! Love that mug and plan on ordering one myself shortly. 😊

I was feeling pretty stressed in the hours leading up to seeing that quote. When I read it it was like a flood of peace and calm. You're so right, the evil definitely is palpable. What do you believe the purpose of these events are?

Thank you! I couldn't believe the detail in the photo. The mug is made well, I really like it. I've having a cup of guzbucking green tea right now! : ) Enjoy your weekend @deerjay!

We just have to hope that the Light will prevail. I truly do believe that we are at a great crossroads in our lives and it really is a battle of good vs evil. I think sometimes that this is just how it is suppose to be to test us in some way and figure out which side we choose to be on. 💖
You're very welcome! I'm looking forward to placing an order and getting a "guzbucking" cup of my own! 😉

I agree. I really think it's our time to stand up and demand better from our government and leaders.

how are you dear friend @ericvancewalton
It's a shame how things are happening in your town, dear friend, it's true, we see on the news the frustration and disenchantment of many citizens.

It is good that you have decided on your smartphone, and that everything is fine now, you really take some very beautiful photographs, I love the sharpness it has captured

It is very interesting that you have kept the personalized poems through the years, that speaks very well of your work

I think our friend will give you some beautiful illustrations, knowing her dedication and commitment in what she does.

Enjoy your new cups, you are a good infusion drinker

I take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful afternoon dear friend

America is very divided at the moment and I hope we can find a way to heal and get past this time of chaos. Thanks for your comment and enjoy this beautiful weekend!

This week the protests, the US presidential campaign and the departure of Leo Messi from Barcelona, have made headlines. A crazy and upside-down world! The development of your book has been very interesting and you already have a captive audience. I also imagine the images of @Opheliafu and I'm jumping out of my skin. Ah, the picture is great. Although expensive, the cell phone is an excellent investment at this time, and especially for you who like to capture special moments. Have a nice weekend, Eric!

What a tumultuous time we live in Nancy. I feel like we're on the cusp of some major changes as some of these older politicians transition out of power. It's been a real joy to create the book in this way and I'll probably do something similar with the next one. I hope to publish a collection of short stories in early 2021. I know the illustrations from Ophelia will compliment the text perfectly, I can't wait to see them. I hope you enjoy your weekend Nancy! Thanks for taking the time to read this and comment!

Honestly, I have gotten to the point where I genuinely don't expect any good news once I turn on the TV or news in general. It is just one devastating news after the other. The thing is I have only be indirectly affected by certain issues and it's still makes me so upset, I can only imagine how does that are affected directly will cope.
Anyways, I am grateful for life and health.

This year is enough to make you that way. So many of the positive stories aren't even reported. These days you really have to seek out the positive or you're bombarded with negatives. It's never a bad idea to shift to a place of gratitude like you are describing , Anyways, I am grateful for life and health. This will attract more good things your way.

What a broken world this has become in a shrot space of time, but how true, let's not be overwhelmed and let us continue to light up the world around us; our world!
I saw @sultnpapper's post on his Guzbuck online store, must head over there and check it out! Nice mug!

Definitely @lizelle! I think it's time for everyone to stand up and demand our governments do better. It's our responsibility to do so at this point. Yeah, the mug is great! It's good quality too. Take care my friend!

Glad to see your guzbucking "I need coffee" mug arrived and to hear your happy with it. Thank you very much for the review of mug and the plug for the guzbuck_shop online. That was pretty quick delivery too, not AmPrime quick, but quick nonetheless.
I must be one guzbucking wicked person because the say there is no rest for the wicked and I have no rest in sight. One company I do design work for dropped a project on me this week to design that has thirty "villas" on it plus the common areas. Each villa is about 2200 square feet and placed at odd angles so it is very time consuming in laying out the systems. Needless to say I've been absent from HIVE for the better part of the week and might be for a couple more.
That phone of yours takes great photos, the cathedral looks fantastic and everything is in focus from the flowers in the foreground all the way to the domed building in the far background on the left of the picture. Not many cell phone cameras can do that over such a large span of area.
I'm going to try to set some time aside to catch back up on the beta read but right now I have to get back to drawing.
Thanks again for everything,
Sult

You're welcome! I was surprised because the delivery estimate for the mug was mid-September. I like it when companies under promise and over deliver.

It sounds like you had your work cut out for you this week. My wife and I were wondering if the storm from the hurricane came through your part of Texas.

I think the SE 2020 was Apple's attempt to try to compete with some of the less expensive Android phones. It's missing some of the bells and whistles of Apple's more expensive phones but will suit me just fine. It's got enough memory and processing power to be eligible for iOS updates for another 4-5 years so I'll be happy if I can get 4 years out of it. The fact that it shoots 4k video sealed the deal for me, I won't have to buy a vlogging camera at first. I'll just shoot footage with this.

Enjoy what's left of the weekend!

We missed the hurricane by about 50 miles from anything bad happening we only got about 3" of rain out of it.
The coastal areas south and east of us got pounded by storm surge and high winds but we were lucky.
You too with the weekend, back to drawing now for me.

That is a pretty cool mug! That is also a really nice shot with your phone! I am glad that you found something that is going to work out well for you. Moving from one phone to another can be such a pain!

Thanks, man! Yeah, the Google Authenticator always gives me fits. None of the instructions online ever seem to work for iOS. I always have to turn off 2FA on every single website then turn the feature back on and reconnect everything with the new phone.
