I think you made the right choice, the cheapest cow looks fit and clean. I should know, my mother was from a family of cattle traders, although their business ended 40 years ago. It was a way to make a living for two sons of a tenant farmer who couldn't get their own farm. They did get a house and a nice car eventually. Trades were confirmed by slapping each others' hands twice and paid in cash.

Out of curiosity, I looked up cattle prices in the Netherlands, and they're pretty similar to what you found. $700 to $1400 for a fat, healthy young Holstein bull without a pedigree. No grazing in the wild here, though.
