In the last post, we highlighted some of the solutions we can find in sex. We found that similarly to hugs, sex can affect anxiety in a way that reduces it. We saw that the hormone oxytocin was mentioned as part of what helps deal with anxiety. Another hormone highlighted was Endorphine which is not only released during sex but exercise. What I didn’t mention was that sex can also be a calorie burner for those interested in exercise. Those who have sex more often are also found to have a reduced level of cortisol, the stress hormone that we have discussed in previous posts. According to the sex experts in the USA today, they mention that sex once a week for a couple in their 50s and 60s is an average amount while for those in their 20s and 30s about twice a week is an average amount.

In this post, we want to see the relationship between phone calls and anxiety and it falls more into the class of social anxiety which we have already discussed than a phobia. This is a very interesting topic among anxiety disorders. There is always one phobia or the other that comes out with its new name and people are surprised by its existence. After that, we will talk about how to get over phone call anxiety.

Good day, I hope you are having a good one, this is the Medic Vibes blog where we help each other stay up to date with mental health topics. This blog is being hosted by @ebingo, he is a medical doctor and an illustrator. We are yet to move to our main blog because as it is we just have one writer and illustrator. We currently blog on the STEMsocial community. Last month we talked about depression and this month is all about anxiety. Last month just like this month we started with a study that was done in Nigeria, this month it found a 50% prevalence of anxiety in a youth camp. Just like last month after the study, we started looking at Twitter posts and that is what we are doing right now.

Anxiety is a medical problem, but more so in the field of mental health. It is characterised by a higher occurrence of fear and worry.

Younger people are more affected and this was seen in the study we discussed in older posts. There was a 50% prevalence of anxiety in the youth camp according to the study.

In Nigeria, nearly 1% of the population is dealing with anxiety and about 3% of the world yearly suffers from it.

The world population has a yearly incidence of 3% of people with anxiety and in Nigeria, it is seen in about 1% of the entire population.

Everyone has had to deal with some form of anxiety in their lives, the issue with anxiety disorders is that these causes are things experienced every day such as work school, people and the like. It is generally not uncommon to feel anxious about an exam but to feel that level of anxiety over daily events is abnormal. In Obsessive Compulsive disorder, there is the constant need to check on things that have been checked on, which in some way can be seen in normal people, but when it gets bad is when there it is seen on most days on a 6 months period where it affects sleep and normal function.

Some of the symptoms of anxiety are symptoms such s pain in the abdomen, and chest, fast breathing and heartbeats.

The above physical symptoms and other symptoms that can be present are psychological symptoms such as insomnia, flashbacks, nightmares and others.

Anxiety can also present with avoidance as we saw in social anxiety disorders yesterday.

The Diagnostic and Statistic Manual says that that ht reason for the anxiety must be about a variety of topics, and it has to be present for most parts of 6 months. There are difficulties trying to control the anxiety. The anxiety exists with pain symptoms difficulty paying attention, fatigue, jitteriness, and difficulty sleeping. One of these symptoms in the previous symptoms has to be present in children.

Those who suffer from anxiety are likely to deal with depression and depression can lead to suicidal ideation. It is very important to do this and watches for these changes.

Since 1849 humans have tried and invented different types of phones. This was all thanks to the inventor Alexander Bells. I am very sure that when he was investing the phone he had no way to know that the device would be a cause of anxiety for so many. People feel scared to talk to their dates, and their bosses and much just practice avoidance of the whole process. In this post, we want to look into this condition.

A survey done showed that more than 3 out of 4 millennials and nearly half of the baby boomers working in offices in the UK in 2019 would fight with anxiety when their phone rang. A good number of them would simply avoid the phone when it rang.

In the bid to avoid phone calls many have opted for texting as a preferential method of communication. Text-based communication is more common in those dealing with phone anxiety because they can gauge their responses before making a reply. This has been confirmed by several studies that show that phone anxiety is more social anxiety than anything else. The person is bothered about what the person on the other side of the call thinks of them.

Tips

For anyone dealing with phone anxiety, it is important to note that the more you put off answering calls, and making calls the worse the condition is going to get. If you try, little by little it is going to significantly reduce the worrying associated with it.

theconveration.com suggests that you make a list of close friends and family that you wish to speak to and write down what bothers you about speaking to them. After the call, you should be grateful for the encounter and what it means to your level of confidence. After this, you move on to the next person on the list.

If these methods do not work, then you should consider seeing a physician or a therapist for help. You might need to be placed on anxiolytics depending on the level of your social anxiety.

Hive stories

@liveofdall explains how coffee can be a major cause of anxiety and how many patients can have issues with anxiety because of caffeine use. I'm very glad to be quoting this wonderful physician for the second time. She is into mental health and also her illustrations were very superb.

Her post is very educating and you could learn a lot from it. Check it out here.

Questions

  • What did you learn about phones?
  • What did you learn about anxiety?
  • What are your thought on the effects of phones on anxiety?
  • Is phone anxiety a type of social anxiety or a phobia?

Conclusion

Phone anxiety is not a type of phobia but a type of social anxiety. It is treatable and seeking help is very important.

I hope that you learned a lot from this post.

very good development topic @ebingo
for many people anxiety is not seen as something that could affect so much, and the reality is that yes, it affects a lot.
The reasons that produce it are very diverse, and the definitive cure many times must engage both psychological and psychiatric therapy, ie medication.
Sport helps to reduce it, in addition to the additional benefits they produce in the body.
Much to say about it, but you have developed the subject very well.
