If you are new to the Earth Disaster Cycle, I encourage you to reach about the Laschamp Event. Every six thousand years, our Earth experiences a magnetic pole excursion. The Laschamp Event was the first one detected and has the most research made on it. Just a couple of days ago a paper was published describing how the Magnetic Field dropped to 4%. These solar cycles are punctuated by an occurrence every twelve thousand years that our solar system passes through a massive dust spiral along the galactic plane.
