West Indian woodnettle (Laportea aestuans), belonging to the family Urticaceae, is a plant that can reach up to 1.5 meters tall, it is common in southern Mexico, the West Indies and all tropical South America; also in the tropics of the Old World.

The following photographs were taken while hiking on a mountain and show that the leaves are broadly ovate, up to 10 x 7 centimeters with broadly serrated margins, the base is truncate, the apex is acuminate and the petiole can be up to 7 centimeters long. The leaves have pointed stinging hairs.

On several occasions while hiking in the mountain I have rubbed my arms with its leaves, and the penetration of the stinging hairs in the skin has always been multiple. Many phytochemicals such as saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenols, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides and steroids are present in the dried leaves. Studies on leaves of the plant have reported that certain phytochemicals are responsible for the beneficial property of Laportea aestuans as an antihyperplastic agent in rats, which may influence the development of a new drug against benign prostatic hyperplasia.

In a study in which 1332 milligrams of plant material was mixed with CaCO3 (calcium carbonate), the neutralization time was significantly higher than for CaCO3 alone and exhibited an antacid profile that was able to maintain neutralizing activity one pH unit higher for an extended period of time. In this regard, with further investigation of the active compound, mechanism of action and possible toxicity, the plant could form the basis of a new antacid.

Finally, I did not find any flowering plant in the mountain, however, in the yard of my house there is still a plant growing on a wall and some flowers can be seen on it. This plant usually produces inflorescences that resemble a dense cyme that can reach up to 8 centimeters long, light green with white petals.
Finalmente comentar que en la montaña no encontré alguna planta con flores, no obstante, en el patio de mi casa aún se encuentra una planta creciendo en una pared y en ella se aprecian algunas flores. Esta planta por lo general produce inflorescencias que asemejan a una densa cima que puede alcanzar hasta 8 centímetros de largo, verde claro con pétalos blancos.
