A skipper butterfly - Una mariposa saltarina.
The next butterfly I saw while ascending a mountain, in an area with a lot of vegetation that made it difficult for me to move around the area to chase it. The butterfly was going from branch to branch feeding on nectar from the flowers of a plant commonly known as "pink snakeweed" (Stachytarpheta mutabilis).
La siguiente mariposa la vi mientras ascendía por una montaña, en una zona con mucha vegetación que dificultaba que me desplazara por el área para perseguirla. La mariposa iba de rama en rama alimentándose del néctar de las flores de una planta conocida comúnmente como "rabo de gato" (Stachytarpheta mutabilis).
The butterfly is of the family Hesperiidae, which is the second biggest of the six families of butterflies with approximately 4,200 species in the planet. In the Neotropics, which covers from Mexico to Argentina, there are about 2,500 species.
La mariposa es de la familia Hesperiidae, que es la segunda familia más grande de las seis familias de mariposas con aproximadamente 4.200 especies en el planeta. En el neotrópico, que cubre desde México hasta Argentina, hay alrededor de 2.500 especies.
This family of butterflies has as characteristics, that they are medium to small size with less than 55 millimeters wingspan, their head and body is thick compared to the wings which are short.
Esta familia de mariposas tiene como características, que son de tamaño mediano a pequeño con menos de 55 milímetros de envergadura en las alas, su cabeza y cuerpo es grueso en comparación con las alas que son cortas.
Another characteristic is that they fly quickly, darting from flower to flower, and that is why they are known by the name "skipper"; "saltarina" in Spanish.
Otra característica es que vuelan con rapidez, lanzándose de flor en flor, y por eso se les conoce con el nombre de "saltarina"; "skipper" en inglés.
Many have dark colors, often brown and/or yellow/golden/cream, and feed mainly on flowers' nectar and bird droppings.
Muchas tienen colores oscuros a menudo marrón y/o amarillo/dorado/crema, y se alimentan principalmente del néctar de las flores y excrementos de aves.
The larvae are distinguished by folding the leaves of their host plant and joining them with silk threads to form a refuge.
Las larvas se distinguen por doblar las hojas de su planta hospedera y unirlas con hilos de seda, para formar un refugio.
The family Hesperiidae has 6 subfamilies: Eudaminae, Tagiadinae, Pyrrhopyginae, Pyrginae, Heteropterinae and Hesperiinae. The butterfly in the photographs belongs to the subfamily Eudaminae. Butterflies in this subfamily sit with open wings, many have tails and spots or stripes on the forewing.
La familia Hesperiidae tiene 6 subfamilias: Eudaminae, Tagiadinae, Pyrrhopyginae, Pyrginae, Heteropterinae y Hesperiinae. La mariposa en las fotografías pertenece a la subfamilia Eudaminae. Las mariposas en esta subfamilia se posan con las alas abiertas, muchas tienen colas y manchas o rayas en las alas anteriores.
The subfamily Eudaminae is divided into 4 tribes: Entheini, Phocidini, Eudamini and Oileidini. The butterfly in the photographs resembles species of the genus Nascus of the tribe Phocidini and the genus Autochton of the tribe Eudamini. I was unable to identify the species.
La subfamilia Eudaminae está dividida en 4 tribus: Entheini, Phocidini, Eudamini and Oileidini. La mariposa en las fotografías es parecida a especies del género Nascus de la tribu Phocidini y del género Autochton de la tribu Eudamini. No logré identificar la especie.
Finally I note that some species of Hesperiidae of the subfamily Eudaminae are significantly active flyers mostly during dawn and dusk, especially in tropical areas. Some genera in which such activity has been observed are: Bungalotis, Dyscophellus, Sarmientoia, Nascus and Salatis.
Finalmente destaco que algunas especies de Hesperiidae de la subfamilia Eudaminae son significativamente activas voladoras mayormente durante el alba y el crepúsculo, en especial en zonas tropicales. Algunos géneros en los que se ha observado esa actividad son: Bungalotis, Dyscophellus, Sarmientoia, Nascus y Salatis.
