La macrofotografía como recurso científico// Macrophotography as a scientific resource

Los estudios científicos han sido elementales en el desarrollo del conocimiento sobre las especies. La tecnología y el uso de sus recursos ha permitido a la humanidad ir más allá y avanzar en la captura de sus detalles.

Scientific studies have been elemental in the development of knowledge about species. Technology and the use of its resources has allowed mankind to go further and advance in capturing their details.

Cuando estudié mi carrera de pregrado, no tenía acceso a alguna cámara especializada, por lo que era imprescindible dibujar; eso se hacía observando los detalles, más dependía mucho de las destrezas del observador para plasmar el ejemplar.

When I studied as an undergraduate, I did not have access to a specialized camera, so it was essential to draw; this was done by observing the details, but it depended a lot on the skills of the observer to capture the specimen.

Alguna vez mi laboratorio fue dotado de un microscopio multimedia, pero el acceso era muy limitado para preservarlo. Ahora con el uso del celular, los estudiantes capturan hermosos detalles y la identificación se hace más práctica y eficaz.

At one time my laboratory was equipped with a multimedia microscope, but access was too limited to preserve it. Now with the use of cell phones, students capture beautiful details and identification becomes more practical and efficient.

En ambos casos hablamos de arte, y esto ha sido fundamental para la enseñanza de la Biología, en lo que a mi particularmente respecta. Desde hace un tiempo pude adquirir en Bogotá unas lentillas macro con un alcance de 60X y luz led. Esto ha sido increíble, pues a pesar de estar retirada de los laboratorios institucionales por la pandemia, he creado un espacio en el que sigo generando conocimiento científico.

In both cases we are talking about art, and this has been fundamental for the teaching of Biology, as far as I am concerned. Some time ago I was able to acquire in Bogota some macro lenses with a 60X scope and LED light. This has been incredible, because despite being retired from institutional laboratories due to the pandemic, I have created a space in which I continue to generate scientific knowledge.

Estas lentillas me han permitido hacer macrofotografía y aunque no soy una experta he disfrutado el proceso. Para mejorar la luminosidad pude adquirir un aro de luz; además e incluso unas nuevas lentillas, mas lastimosamente no son mejores que las que he venido usando.

These lenses have allowed me to do macro photography and although I am not an expert I have enjoyed the process. To improve the luminosity I was able to acquire a light ring; in addition and even some new lenses, but unfortunately they are not better than the ones I have been using.

La fotomacrografía es aquella que nos va a permitir capturar imágenes aumentadas de estructuras micros. Esto es algo que solo la tecnología ha podido lograr, y que permite a un investigador tomar detalles en el campo, sin extraer la muestra de su hábitat.

Photomacrography is that which will allow us to capture magnified images of microscopic structures. This is something that only technology has been able to achieve, and that allows a researcher to take details in the field, without extracting the sample from its habitat.

Afortunadamente he podido hace años adquirir un celular Huawei P20, cuya fortaleza es su cámara Leica, la misma que poseen algunos microscopios. Esto ha dado un valor agregado a las fotografías que he venido presentando.

Fortunately, years ago I was able to acquire a Huawei P20 cell phone, whose strength is its Leica camera, the same that some microscopes have. This has given an added value to the photographs that I have been presenting.

Podemos decir entonces que, la macrofotografía ha sido elemental en los estudios científicos, pues gracias a esta, se ha obtenido una imagen aumentada de las especies, lo que permite visualizar mejor las estructuras más pequeñas. Ojos compuestos, piezas bucales, pelos, las escamas de un ala de algún lepidóptero, las estructuras de una extremidad, las anteras y tubos polínicos o incluso los soros, han sido alguno de mis logros.

We can say then that macrophotography has been elementary in scientific studies, because thanks to it, we have obtained a magnified image of the species, which allows us to better visualize the smallest structures. Compound eyes, mouthparts, hairs, the scales of a lepidopteran wing, the structures of a limb, anthers and pollen tubes or even sori, have been some of my achievements.
