Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform, welcome back to my blog dedicated to the study and dissemination of material related to the fascinating world of arthropods. The present writing is dedicated to a genus of Coleoptera with a very striking morphology, aspects that will be described in the following article.

Coleoptera are a very active group of insects and one of the most successful that exist on our planet. These organisms, in addition to presenting an amazing diversity, have managed to colonize and leave their mark on practically all continents, even being present in very cold areas and some of their species have managed to live in aquatic ecosystems. It is estimated that these invertebrates have been inhabiting the planet for more than 200 million years, undergoing various morphological changes in order to adapt to the pressure generated by the environment.

Many of the species that make up this fascinating order of the class Insecta, have over the years become highly valued organisms in the scientific field, where they are constantly studied to understand aspects of their morphology, defense mechanisms, behavior, habitats or the role they play in ecosystems. Likewise, thanks to this type of research, many of their specimens have been given diverse utilities, especially in forensic sciences; at the same time, it is also important to mention that another part of these invertebrates are a constant problem in some ecosystems modified by man (agroecosystems), where they find the right conditions to reproduce and later end up becoming pests of certain crops.

Within the order Coleoptera there is a large family known as Cerambycidae, which is characterized by the fact that many of its species have long and robust antennae, which is why they are usually called "longicorn beetles". The size of these sensory parts in very variable between species, but they are always more elongated compared to the other families that make up this order, this being the main feature that differentiates them from the rest.

This family of longicorn beetles is part of the largest suborder that exists within the Coleoptera, this being known scientifically as Polyphaga; hosting a total of 300,000 species of the approximately 400,000 that make up the aforementioned order, a large number that never ceases to cause astonishment.

On the other hand, one of the most striking genera that lives within the family Cerambycidae is Neoclytus. This genus contains specimens that can reach 2 centimeters in length, standing out not only for the size of its body, but also have very elongated antennae and legs, which is why it can be confused with other types of insects, such as hemiptera of the family Coreidae or orthoptera (grasshoppers), however, when its external characteristics are detailed, it is observed that it has aspects of any coleopteran, which will be explained later.

This genus is composed of an estimated 58 species distributed across several continents, being considered for this reason as cosmopolitan insects. Some of its species are more popular than others in certain countries, but they are always striking for the series of patterns that can be seen on the back of their elytra, which are reminiscent of hieroglyphs left by ancient civilizations.

Morphologically, this arthropod has the characteristics of any member of the class Insecta but with slight variants of its genus. First we can separate each of the regions that divide its body, being these the head, thorax and abdomen, in the first segment of its body stands out that it has a very small head compared to the rest of its body, it also has a wider thoracic region, being the abdomen the longest part of its body. Likewise, the entire exoskeleton of this insect is covered by a thick layer of chitin, which helps it withstand the inclement weather and protect itself from external impacts which may be generated by a predator or a fall during flight.

On the other hand, it can be observed in the photographic material the long extremities that this beetle has, being the first and second pair of legs shorter than the posterior, likewise, the femur is the thickest part of its long legs, being this segment the most striking. Similarly, their long antennae are also noticeable, these sensory organs can have different uses, but the main one is that it allows them to capture changes in their environment and also facilitates them to find the traces of chemicals released by the opposite sex or by a similar.

Finally highlight their wings, in the photograph you can distinguish their anterior wings, which are completely modified to the point of hardening completely, this type of wings called elytra are not used directly for flight, since its main function is to provide protection to the pair of posterior wings which is membranous, these being very fragile, in addition the anterior pair can serve to provide stability to the insect during flight. As a curious fact, I have noticed throughout my research and my time at the university, that under these elytra it is very common to find the mites that parasitize these insects, these small arachnids can not only feed on the coleoptera, but they can also use it as a means of transport to reach other areas (fhoresis), this being one of the ways they have to disseminate within ecosystems.

@abneagro(7).png

The main function of the legs is to serve as locomotion units; however, this beetle has more elongated legs than usual, something that makes them very unique knowing that it is a member of the order Coleoptera, a secondary function that may have their legs, is that probably facilitates them to cling to the aerial parts of the plants, this may allow them to place their eggs in an easier way in the case of females. Similarly, another aspect that I could notice of their behavior based on these limbs, is that the last pair which is the longest, is frequently used to clean or rub their elytra and other parts of their body, thus probably eliminating impurities from their body.

@abneagro(5).png

With respect to the identification of this specimen, it should be noted that it was not an easy task, I spent several days comparing this insect with other specimens of the genus Neoclytus, previously the use of taxonomic keys was made to reach the genus, using the dichotomous to discard other families that did not meet the main morphological aspects of the specimen shown. Finally of the 58 species that make up the genus Neoclytus I managed to reduce it to only 3 species, these being Neoclytus cacicus, Neoclytus ypsilon and Neoclytus rufus, the latter being the species to which the coleopteran in the photographs belongs.

The main aspect that must be taken into account to differentiate the species of this genus, besides their predominant color, are the patterns or figures on their elytra, being these key to find the species. This specimen may present small variants in these patterns, for this reason may generate doubts at the time of identification.

These insects are organisms that have a mouthparts with jaws, however, these coleoptera do not represent any problem in their adult state, because despite having jaws they generally feed on flower nectar, but their larvae feed on wood (xylophagous), for this reason they are usually a common problem in the cultivation of certain plants. Adults usually look for plants that are already weakened by the action of other organisms or diseases, in this way the females look for the most affected woody areas of the plant organism, in this place they place their eggs and the larvae will be in charge of causing galleries, thus destroying the plant tissues. Given this behavior, these coleopterans are considered opportunistic insects in agriculture.

The publication presented is informative in nature, serving to demonstrate certain characteristics and relevant data on the genus Neoclytus and on one of its species, in this case Neoclytus rufus. Although during certain stages of its development it is usually a common problem in agriculture, this insect helps to decompose organic matter so that it can later be used by other organisms, such as plants or microorganisms, so it should only be controlled when it is really necessary.
