A small butterfly and its importance in ecosystems (Eng) // Una pequeña mariposa y su importancia en los ecosistemas (Esp)

Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform, welcome once again to my blog. In this writing I will talk about a small butterfly belonging to the hesperiidae family that is very common to see among the various flowers present in Venezuela.

Saludos estimados amigos de la plataforma Hive, sean todos bienvenidos una vez más a mi blog. En el presente escrito les hablaré sobre una pequeña mariposa perteneciente a la familia hesperiidae que es muy común ver entre las diversas flores presentes en Venezuela.

Butterflies and lepidoptera in general, are living beings that capture our attention with their bright colors since the sun appears every morning. These insects have so much diversity in terms of colors and patterns on their wings that it is impossible not to appreciate them and smile every day, they are examples of life and a marvel of evolution.

There are so many of these arthropods in the world that sometimes it is really difficult to identify each specimen. In addition, they are very important organisms within terrestrial ecosystems, as they have several biological functions that contribute to the proper functioning of natural spaces, such as: pollination of plant species, or being part of the food chain on the planet.

Las mariposas y los lepidópteros en general, son seres vivos que por medio de vistosos colores captan nuestra atención desde que el sol se muestra cada mañana. Estos insectos poseen tanta diversidad a nivel de colores y de patrones en sus alas que es imposible no apreciarlas y sonreir cada día, son ejemplos de vida y una maravilla de la evolución.

En el mundo existen tantos de estos artrópodos, que a veces es realmente difícil identificar a cada ejemplar. Además, son organismos muy importantes dentro de los ecosistemas terrestres, ya que tienen diversas funciones biológicas que contribuyen para el correcto funcionamiento de los espacios naturales, tales como: la polinización de especies vegetales, o ser parte de la cadena alimenticia en el planeta.

Not all lepidoptera have striking colors, there are also some that have opaque or simple colors such as brown, gray or black; but even so, this does not detract from their importance, as it is only part of their evolutionary strategies to survive in the hostility of their environment.

On the other hand, seeing butterflies or moths flying around your garden or other spaces is a clear indication that there is little environmental pollution in the area, for this reason this type of insects are widely studied for environmental purposes, as they are very sensitive to changes due to anthropogenic factors promoted by humans.

No todos los lepidópteros poseen colores llamativos, también existen algunos que tienen colores opacos o simples como el marrón, gris o el negro; pero aún así, esto no les resta importancia, ya que solo es parte de sus estrategias evolutivas para poder subsistir en la hostilidad de su entorno.

Por otro lado, el ver a mariposas o polillas volar por tu jardín o por otros espacios, es un claro indicativo de que en la zona hay poca contaminación ambiental, por esta razón este tipo de insectos son ampliamente estudiados con fines ambientales, ya que son muy sensibles a los cambios por factores antropogénicos promovidos por el humano.

The order of Lepidoptera is one of the largest numerically, being only below the Coleoptera. Within its great diversity is a family known as Hesperiidae, many of the species belonging to this family are very small compared to the rest of butterflies or moths.

In the agricultural areas of Venezuela, it is very common to see small butterflies flying at high speed among the flowers, such is the case of the species Ouleus fridericus that you have been able to appreciate since the beginning of the post.

El orden de los lepidópteros es uno de los más grandes que existe en tema numérico, estando tan solo por debajo de los coleopteros. Dentro de su gran diversidad se encuentra una familia conocida como Hesperiidae, muchas de las especies pertenecientes a esta familia son muy pequeñas a comparación del resto de mariposas o polillas.

En las zonas agrícolas de Venezuela, es muy común ver a pequeñas mariposas volando a gran velocidad entre la flores, tal es el caso de la especie Ouleus fridericus que han podido apreciar desde el inicio del post.

Generally, we tend to believe that only moths have dull colors; however, this butterfly shows us that this is not true, since there is a low percentage of diurnal butterflies with dull shades and in turn, there are also nocturnal moths with bright colors. Nature will never cease to surprise us, we just have to observe it with a magnifying glass.

Por lo general se tiende a creer que solo las polillas nocturnas poseen colores poco llamativos; sin embargo, esta mariposa nos demuestra que esto no es cierto, ya que existe un porcentaje bajo de mariposas diurnas con tonalidades opacas y a su vez, también existen polillas nocturnas con vistosos colores. La naturaleza nunca nos va a dejar de sorprender, solo hay que observarla con lupa.

This small butterfly usually hides under the leaves in the afternoon, then becomes very active during the morning. Its coloration is predominantly brown, while the lower part of its body is white; similarly, its thorax and head are wider than its abdomen, while its antennae are located far apart from each other and have thick tips, this feature is very characteristic of the species belonging to the family hesperiidae.

Esta pequeña mariposa suele ocultarse bajo las hojas en horas de la tarde, posteriormente se vuelve muy activa durante la mañana. En su coloración predomina el marrón, mientras que en la parte baja de su cuerpo es blanca; de igual manera, su toráx y cabeza son más amplios que su abdomen, mientras que sus antenas se ubican muy separadas la una de la otra y poseen las puntas gruesas, este rasgo es muy característico de las especies pertenecientes a la familia hesperiidae.

During their juvenile stage and as adults they are completely harmless, they do not possess any defensive mechanism that is of medical importance to us; for this reason they must employ camouflage as an alternative to escape from their natural predators.

We must always protect nature, and by this I am not only referring to living beings in general, but we must also protect the spaces they use to survive. Even in a small plant small ecosystems are formed where arthropods make life, so if we destroy their homes many species are forced to migrate and invade new areas, at this point environmental imbalances that endanger the fascinating world of insects and other invertebrates are generated.

Durante su etapa juvenil y como adulto son completamente inofensivas, no poseen ningún mecanismo defensivo que sea de importancia médica para nosotros; por esta razón deben emplear el camuflaje como alternativa para escapar de sus depredadores naturales.

Debemos siempre proteger a la naturaleza, con esto no me refiero solo a los seres vivos en general, sino que también hay que proteger los espacios que ellos utilizan para sobrevivir. Hasta en una pequeña planta se forman pequeños ecosistemas en donde los artrópodos hacen vida, por lo que si destruimos sus hogares muchas especies se ven obligadas a emigrar e invadir nuevas zonas, en este punto se generan desequilibrios ambientales que ponen en peligro al fascinante mundo de los insectos y demás invertebrados.
